But in 2022, in the end, Iga won again! Less crushing than usual – despite notching up her 18th and 19th “bagels” of the year – and almost unrecognisable in her Round of 16 encounter against Jule Niemeier, the leader of the tour got back in her stride against Jessica Pegula before toppling Aryna Sabalenka then rounding off the tournament with a steadfast win against Ons Jabeur. This third Grand Slam title pushed her even further ahead in the rankings.
