As defending champion at the Australian Open, Naomi Osaka suffered the first shock exit of the season when she lost in the third round to Amanda Anisimova. Stepping back into the spotlight, the young American player saw her series of eight consecutive victories come to an end in the Round of 16 against the future champion, Ashleigh Barty.
