‘Underdog’ Norrie edges Medvedev battle
All the news and updates from around the Grounds on Day 3 at Roland-Garros
Tuesday's play has now ended at Roland-Garros. Second round action gets under way in Paris at 11am on Wednesday. See the order of play for Day 4.
It’s victory for Gael Monfils over Hugo Dellien at just gone midnight 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(4), 6-1 after over three and a half hours on Chatrier. Even after 20 years on tour, this must be one of the Frenchman’s most special wins at his home major at the age of 38. It’s a 40th victory at RG for Gael and it earns him a meeting with fifth seed Jack Draper on Thursday. The day ends in style for the French fans.
It’s another late-night thriller on Chatrier as Gael Monfils fights back from the brink to force a decider against Hugo Dellien. There’s a thunderous roar around the main Roland-Garros show court as the 38-year-old edges the fourth set tiebreak 7-4 to guarantee himself a fifth set. All this after Dellien cruised through the opening two sets. It’s game on as we approach 11.30pm in Paris…
On Chatrier, the French fans are trying to inspire Gael Monfils who is trailing by a set against Hugo Dellien, while over on Simonne-Mathieu Czech former finalist Karolina Muchova is down an early break against American Alycia Parks.
Earlier, while the Joao Fonseca madness was taking place, Canadian 29th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime went out after being up two sets to love on Matteo Arnaldi. The Italian eventually survived 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
Brazil's teenage star Joao Fonseca hammers his way past 28th seed and last week's Geneva runner-up Hubert Hurkacz 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 for the second Grand Slam win of his career and his first at Roland-Garros. Hubi looked a little below par, perhaps tired from a busy 72 hours, but it was some performance from the 18-year-old, who smacked winners throughout. He's still signing autographs and taking selfies on a packed Court 7. The kid's a superstar.
Young Brazilian Joao Fonseca is well on his way to a first Roland-Garros win, up two sets to love and with a break in the third against Hubi Hurkacz on Court 7. The Brazilian fans have been going wild watching their guy smoke winners from all areas of the court.
On Chatrier, it's been a tough start for French favourite Gael Monfils. He took a nasty tumble during the early stages of his match against Hugo Dellien and it's the Bolivian who's up 3-0 first set.
Ahead of a second round meeting with Canada's Victoria Mboko on Wednesday, our US-based writer Victoria Chiesa explains the physical challenges facing German player Eva Lys and the progress she's made living with an autoimmune disease after being diagnosed in 2020.
Out on Court 7 it's Joao Fonseca time and the young Brazilian has made a fast start to his Roland-Garros main draw debut. The teenager has snatched the first set 6-2 against 28th seeded Pole Hubi Hurkacz who looks a bit dazed and confused out there during the early exchanges. There were long queues to get into the court ages before Fonseca even appeared and those lucky enough to get a seat are loving it.
We're around half an hour away from the night session on Chatrier when French fave Gael Monfils takes on Bolivia's Hugo Dellien. Enjoy this promo to put you in the mood...
Even though it's approaching 7pm in Paris, there's a ton of good stuff still to come on Day 3. The night match on Chatrier features Gael Monfils against Hugo Dellien (8.15pm local time), while out on Court 7 there'll be a Brazilian party regardless of what happens on court when Joao Fonseca and Hubert Hurkacz do battle. On Simonne-Mathieu later 14th seed Karolina Muchova faces American Alycia Parks.
Meanwhile, Jack Draper is moving towards a two sets to one lead against Mattia Bellucci on Lenglen, Andrey Rublev needs one more set to beat qualifier Lloyd Harris and last week's Hamburg champ Flavio Cobolli is in control against Marin Cilic.
Take a moment to watch this from Corentin Moutet. One of the points of the week so far...
Novak Djokovic made a smooth return to Grand Slam tennis brushing aside Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 despite some tricky breezy and damp conditions before the Chatrier roof was closed.
Miami champion Jakub Mensik had to dig deep to beat in-form Alexandre Muller in four sets - the Frenchman had served for a two sets to one lead before that match slipped away from him.
Three-time Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur is out after going down 7-6(4) 6-0 to Poland’s Magdalena Frech.
Third seed Jessica Pegula won easily 6-2, 6-4 against Romania’s Anca Todoni.
Meanwhile fifth seed Jack Draper is in a battle, down a set against Italy’s Mattia Bellucci on Lenglen.
Given it's the third and final day of first round action here in Paris on Tuesday, the second round match-ups are starting to take shape across both draws and there's some VERY good stuff to look forward to. Here are some of the matches we're looking forward to on Wednesday and Thursday... 🔥

Ben Shelton had been expecting to play Frenchman Hugo Gaston in the night match on Wednesday, but is already into the round of 32 after his opponent today withdrew from the event. That means Holger Rune against American Emilio Nava will be the Wednesday Chatrier night match. Full details through the link below...
Unseeded Brit Cameron Norrie has come through a marathon out on Court Simonne-Mathieu to put out 11th seed Daniil Medvedev 7-5 in the fifth set. Medvedev looked home and dry when he served for victory at 5-4 in the decider only for Norrie to snatch the win from under his nose. It's Norrie's first success over a former Grand Slam champion at a major. Alexander Zverev meanwhile has beaten Learner Tien on Lenglen in straight sets.
Tomorrow's schedule is out as the second round gets under way in the top half of the women's singles and bottom half of the men's draw. That means we've got Aryna Sabalenka, Carlos Alcaraz and the Iga Swiatek-Emma Raducanu clash on the Day 4 order of play.
Tough break for Grigor Dimitrov out on Court 6 who's had to retire in yet another Grand Slam match - that's four majors in a row now the Bulgarian has been stopped by physical issues. The former world No.3 was up two sets to one on American qualifier Ethan Quinn when he pulled the plug. He was visibly struggling to move properly or hit with any kind of pace during the closing stages of the third set. Quinn goes through 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 ret. He'll play lucky loser Alexander Shevchenko in round two.
Let's hit you with some scores as Tuesday is moving along at pace... Victoria Azarenka, Mirra Andreeva, Sofia Kenin, Hailey Baptiste and Alex de Minaur are all back in the locker room with wins in the bag. American Baptiste beat 23rd seed and former semifinalist Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-1 in the third.
Big names on court at the moment include Coco Gauff on Chatrier, Zverev-Tien on Lenglen, Medvedev-Norrie on Simone-Mathieu and Dimitrov-Quinn on Court 6.
French showman Gael Monfils takes centre stage later when he faces Bolivian Hugo Dellien in the Tuesday night session from 20:15 Paris time. Alix Ramsay gives us her insight ahead of that first round meeting - Monfils goes for his 40th match win here at 38 years of age..

With the men’s and women’s doubles starting on Tuesday, just a quick mention that the mixed doubles draw has been released in the last 24 hours. The top seeds are Mate Pavic and Lyudmyla Kichenok. Take a look at the mixed draw here.
In her 18th Roland-Garros campaign, Victoria Azarenka is through to the second round with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Yanina Wickmayer.
This is Azarenka's second career 6-0, 6-0 at Roland-Garros, 16 years and 363 days after her first (in 2008 against Sorana Cirstea).
Only Maria Sharapova and Kim Clijsters (six each) have won more women's singles Grand Slam matches with this scoreline than Azarenka (five) since 2000, surpassing Serena Williams (four).
Monday had a French flavour to it with emotional scenes for players at both ends of their Roland-Garros careers.
Alex Sharp watched as France's Caroline Garcia said goodbye to her home Slam in what she has announced is her last season on tour. He was also on court as Garcia’s young compatriot Arthur Fils recorded his first RG win.
Richard Gasquet, at the end of a long and storied career here in Paris delayed his farewell for at least another round with victory over Terence Atmane.
Elsewhere, Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz started their campaigns in businesslike fashion. And in a hot ticket match on Court Philippe Chatrier Paula Badosa edged Naomi Osaka in three tough sets.
And if you missed the night session - read Victoria Chiesa's take on No.1 seed Jannik Sinner's first round win over Arthur Rinderknech, despite the Italian trailing 4-0 and 5-2 in the third set.
Here are Best Moments by Emirates, and the Shot of the Day from Carlos Alcaraz.
