For many seasons now, Daniil Medvedev has stood out as one of the most unique and formidable players on the tour. Turning professional in 2014, he climbed the ranks at an irresistible rise, ultimately reaching the world No.1 spot in February 2022 and bringing an end to eighteen years of Big 4 domination. That achievement rewarded a career built on consistency and an ability to challenge the very best.

The former Gilles Cervara’s protégé made his mark at the ATP Finals as early as 2020 before claiming his first Grand Slam title at the 2021 US Open, where he defeated Novak Djokovic in a historic final. Since then, he has become a regular presence on the sport’s biggest stages, contesting six major finals, including three at the Australian Open (2021, 2022, 2024) and another at the US Open in 2023. His consistency has allowed him to finish six consecutive seasons inside the Top 10 while collecting prestigious titles, particularly at Masters 1000 level.

Medvedev’s playing style – unconventional and highly effective – is built on extraordinary defence, surgical counter-punching and an exceptional reading of the game. Capable of retreating far behind the baseline to return, he wears opponents down through relentless repetition and pinpoint accuracy. His twohanded backhand, one of the best on tour, combined with his tactical intelligence, enables him to turn every rally into a psychological battle. While his forehand is not the most explosive, he compensates with variety and clever positioning that disrupt even the most aggressive rivals.

Daniil Medvedev remains a central figure in the sport’s great battles, caught between two generations: the legendary Djokovic and Nadal on one side, and rising prodigies Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner on the other. His rivalry with the younger stars illustrates his role as a true disruptor in a discipline undergoing profound transformation.
