Thursday’s news, results and big stories on the day of the mixed doubles final and women’s singles semifinals in Paris

20:40

See you Friday...

As the last few points of the day are being played in the boys' doubles on Courts 9 and 10, we'll say goodnight at the end of Day 12 as the light starts to fade in Paris.

With the Mirra Andreeva-Maja Chwalinska women's final set for Saturday, our focus on Friday shifts to the men's semifinals on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

At 2.30pm Alexander Zverev plays Jakub Mensik, and not before 7pm it's the Italian derby between Matteo Arnaldi and Flavio Cobolli.

In addition there are three men's and women's doubles semifinals on Court Simonne-Mathieu, more big matches across the wheelchair draws and we head into the sharp end of the junior events too.

See you for the start of play at 11am.

Qualifier Chwalinska into Roland-Garros final

We’re witnessing astonishing scenes on Chatrier where world No.114 Maja Chwalinska is in dreamland in Paris after beating Diana Shnaider in straight sets to move into Saturday’s women’s final.

The 24-year-old wins her ninth match at Roland-Garros - three in qualifying and six in the main draw - to become only the second qualifier to reach a Grand Slam final in the Open era. The only other player to match her achievement is Emma Raducanu when she won the US Open as a qualifier in 2021.

Chwalinska’s brand of variety, her changes of spins, speeds, depths and her defence and incredible speed and stamina earn her a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory in just over two hours. She falls to the clay in disbelief at what's just happened.

She will play No.8 seed Mirra Andreeva on Saturday.

"It's like a dream," she says. "I don't know what's going on."

The real marathon man of Roland-Garros 2026

It's a common term to describe any player who has come through a gruelling five-setter, but Matteo Arnaldi has the dubious record of taking the most time in a single Grand Slam to get to the semifinal - 19 hours and 42 minutes. You read that right.

Arnaldi had been falling down the rankings due to a foot injury, but coach Fabio Colangelo is the man working with the Italian to bring him back up to the level he believes he deserves. Chris Oddo sat down with Colangelo to find out how he's doing it.

Another physio break

It's now Shnaider's turn to call for the physio, who is massaging her lower back on court. Shnaider is up 4-3 in the second set with Chwalinska to serve - there's really not much daylight between these two at the moment.

Physio out for Chwalinska

Chwalinska breaks in the first game of the second set before Shnaider digs in to take the next two going into the next sitdown with a 2-1 lead. The physio and doctor then come out for the Polish player at the change of ends. She has both upper legs taped for this match, but there’s no medical time out yet. On we go.

18:25

First set Chwalinska 7-6(4)

An absorbing first set comes to a close after 77 minutes and it’s the qualifier Maja Chwalinska who finally clinches it 7-6(4) after being 4-2 down in the tiebreak.

The Polish world No.114 has produced some world class defence at times and her variety and refusal to give up on chasing ball after ball after ball has driven Diana Shnaider a little bit crazy at times. It's amazing to think this is the 24-year-old's ninth match of her stay in Paris after three wins just to reach the main draw.

That first set lasted longer than the entire first semifinal of the day, which Mirra Andreeva won in an hour and 16 minutes.

Not surprisingly Shnaider has disappeared off court for a bathroom break and mental refresh.

Shnaider-Chwalinska into a tiebreak

It's been a fascinating first set between Diana Shnaider and Maja Chwalinska, a completely different clay court battle to our first semifinal.

It’s exactly the kind of match we were expecting - extended and physical rallies, lots of angles, changes of trajectory, pace and spin from two lefties trying to outmanoeuvre one another.

Once Chwalinska had seen her 3-1 lead disappear there's been nothing to separate them. We've been going over an hour and it's still impossible to tell who's going to win this set.

Chwalinska makes strong start

It’s the qualifier from Poland Maja Chwalinska who’s enjoyed the better start and already has two breaks under her belt on her Grand Slam semifinal debut.

The world No.114 takes Diana Shnaider’s serve to love to open up a 3-1 lead and is getting a lot of support this afternoon inside Chatrier.

The 24-year-old is aiming to become just the second qualifier in the Open era to get to a Grand Slam singles final after Emma Raducanu did it in New York in 2021.

Shnaider and Chwalinska on court

Diana Shnaider and Maja Chwalinska are out on court inside the Chatrier stadium after a brief break between semifinals during which Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia was a guest of honour down on court as Roland-Garros celebrated the former world No.4's career with a tribute video and presentation.

The next semifinal on court sees the world No.23 Shnaider start as a strong favourite against the world No.114 Chwalinska who has won eight matches since she arrived to play the qualifying event at the start of Opening Week.

It’s their second meeting after Shnaider won their only previous match on clay in Istanbul four years ago 6-4, 6-4. They’re both aiming for a first major final and Mirra Andreeva awaits for whoever holds their nerve under the Chatrier roof.

Andreeva beats Kostyuk 6-1, 6-3

Mirra Andreeva is a Roland-Garros finalist after outclassing Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 16 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

For a few brief moments it felt like Kostyuk might be starting to mount a recovery but it was short-lived as a very composed Andreeva broke yet again to go ahead 5-3 in the second set and then served out the match to 15.

Her racket is flung aside, and she throws her arms into the air to celebrate.

It’s Andreeva's first Grand Slam final at the age of 19. She will play either Diana Shnaider or Maja Chwalinska in Saturday’s final.

"I’m happy that I’m in my first Grand Slam final," she tells the crowd. "It’s amazing, I’ve never felt anything like this before. I’m very excited about my last match here in Paris."

16:15

Roof closed, Marta fighting, crowd responding

There’s rain on the way here so the Chatrier roof has been closed. Will that change the complexion of this match? The crowd want more and are desperate to get behind Marta Kostyuk as the Ukrainian holds for 2-4 then breaks Mirra Andreeva to love to drag the scores back to 3-4 second set. We're back on serve, and this has a different feel now. Volume rising.

Andreeva cruising towards final

Mirra Andreeva has hardly put a foot wrong so far, and continues to build on her near-perfect first set. The 19-year-old world No.8 saved a break point to hold in the first game of the second set then broke again with a superb backhand winner up the line en route to a 3-0 advantage.

Marta Kostyuk finally gets the scoreboard moving in the fourth game but already Andreeva must be starting to think about a first major final at 6-1, 3-1.

First set Andreeva 6-1

No.8 seed Mirra Andreeva has been the quicker to settle on a big day for both players and after opening up that 3-0 lead, it soon became 4-0 after just 16 minutes of the first semifinal.

Marta Kostyuk did well to get on the board with her first hold after saving five break points in the fifth game but Andreeva kept building to hold and break for a third time to secure the first set after 33 minutes.

Andreeva jumps into 3-0 lead

It’s been a strong start by Mirra Andreeva who broke in the first game largely thanks to two nervy double faults from Marta Kostyuk, then held from 0-40 for 2-0. The teenager breaks again for a 3-0 lead in a slight breeze down on Chatrier. She's fully in charge.

Andreeva-Kostyuk ready to roll

World No.8 Mirra Andreeva and world No.15 Marta Kostyuk are out on Court Philippe-Chatrier ahead of the first women’s semifinal of the day.

Kostyuk leads their head-to-head 2-0 and both wins came this year - on hard 7-6(7), 6-3 in Brisbane and a 6-3, 7-5 victory in the Madrid final a few weeks ago on clay at altitude.

Neither has made a Grand Slam final before, although Andreeva has the experience of playing a Roland-Garros semifinal having reached this stage in 2024.

Around the grounds

There’s a nice feel to the RG grounds today with fans enjoying some of the wheelchair tennis and junior matches on the outside courts. There was a good crowd around Court 14 supporting French star Ksenia Chasteau as she beat South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane 6-4, 6-4 to move into the women’s wheelchair singles semifinals.

Top seed Yui Kamiji is just starting her quarterfinal on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, Dutch legend Diede de Groot is on Court 11 right now and quad wheelchair singles top seed Sam Schroder is trailing Turkey’s Ahmet Kaplan by a set on Court 12.

There’s also a sizeable crowd around Court 10 where Brazil's boys’ top seed Guto Miguel is a set away from the semifinals. Our man Chris Oddo met the youngster a couple of days ago.

Despite a determined comeback from mixed doubles defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, the 4-0 quick start from their opponents was too much to overhaul and the American-Canadian pair secured the set 6-4 after 39 minutes.

Dabrowski has already lifted the mixed doubles trophy - in 2017 alongside Rohan Bopanna, and King was last year's runner-up partnering Taylor Townsend.

What we wrote about on Wednesday

It was a busy day around the grounds but as ever our RG reporters were up to the task.

Alex Sharp headed over to Chatrier to watch as Maja Chwalinska became only the second qualifier in the Open era to get to an RG semifinal. But who is Maja Chwalinska? Alex sat down with her to find out a little more about the 24-year-old

In the second quarterfinal of the day, Chris Oddo took over the seat on Chatrier and watched as No.1 seed Aryna Sabalenka went a set up against Diana Shnaider. He then had to rewrite his first draft as Sabalenka lost 10 games straight and Shnaider booked her place in the semifinal. How would Sabalenka react? Chris was there to find out. A man who gets everywhere, Chris was also there to find out how quad wheelchair star Niels Vink is going about his quest to hold all four Grand Slam titles.

Dan Imhoff spoke to some of those who have gone before, including Jo Wilfried Tsonga, to find out how this year’s wide-open men’s singles draw might affect players’ motivations - and pressure. He then moved over to Chatrier for the first of the day’s men’s quarterfinals, and Flavio Cobolli’s victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime to set up an all-Italian semifinal.

The last quarterfinal of RG was under the lights on Chatrier and Victoria Chiesa was watching as Matteo Berrettini was forced into a heartbreaking retirement due to injury - handing the semifinal spot to compatriot Matteo Arnaldi.
