That’s a wrap

It’s been another monster day of tennis in Paris and we’ll do it all again in a few hours when Day 3 bursts into life at 11am on Tuesday.

We’ve got defending men's champion Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka, Casper Ruud, Elena Rybakina, Holger Rune, Taylor Fritz, Madison Keys and Victoria Azarenka all in action among others. It's the third and final day of first round matches before the second round gets going on Wednesday.

Medvedev digs deep

It’s Daniil Medvedev’s turn to come through a late-night thriller as he finally scraps his way past Germany’s Dominik Koepfer in four sets, a result that brings the curtain down on the day's play. The No.5 seed started to turn on the style towards the end of a 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win on Court Simonne-Mathieu. The victory sets him up with a tricky second round meeting with Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic.

00:11

Cocciaretto comeback!

Notable result in the early hours of Tuesday morning as Brazilian No.13 seed and 2023 semi-finalist Beatriz Haddad Maia goes out to Italian world No.51 Elisabetta Cocciaretto 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Her reward is a second round meeting with Spain's Cristina Bucsa in round two.

23:50

Koepfer comeback?

It was looking like Daniil Medvedev was about wrap up his contest with Dominik Koepfer in straight sets but the German lefty has other ideas. The world No.65 strikes with Medvedev serving at 5-6 in the third to steal the set 7-5 and we're into a fourth on Court Simonne-Mathieu.

That's one of three matches still on court as we approach midnight. Roman Safiullin and Dusan Lajovic are into a fifth on Court 10, while Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Beatriz Hadda Maia are also into a decider on Court 14.

La Monf into R2

The locals will head into the Paris night happy as Gael Monfils completes a four-set win over young Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild on Chatrier.

The 37-year-old former semi-finalist came back from an early break down in the third to win 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. He'll face Italy's Lorenzo Musetti in the second round.

Monfils back in front

We've got quite a night session unfolding on a noisy Chatrier as French favourite Gael Monfils finds another gear to start to pull away from Thiago Seyboth Wild. The Frenchman lost the second set and was down an early break in the third before improving his level to go in front.

He leads 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 1-1...

Monday night round-up

On Chatrier, Gael Monfils is enjoying some big crowd support in the Day 2 night session and took the first set against Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-2. The young Brazilian is fighting back in the second though and is up a break.

Elsewhere under the Roland-Garros lights Daniil Medvedev is off to a quick start against Germany’s Dominik Koepfer up 3-0 first set.

American Frances Tiafoe and Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci are into a fifth on Court 6.

Serb Miomir Kecmanovic is ahead by two sets to one on another Brazilian, Thiago Monteiro.

19:52

And the excitement's not over yet

Gael Monfils and Thiago Seyboth Wild will take to Court Philippe-Chatrier shortly for the night session. They pair are at different ends of the experience scale, and have only met on one occasion, but here's sneak preview of what we can expect.

19:45

Here's the man himself

"It's difficult for me to talk."

Thankfully he managed it - Rafa spoke to fans on Chatrier immediately after his defeat to Zverev. What a speech, and what a reception from the crowd.

19:37

Have we mentioned Rafa recently?

There's a lot to think about and it's still early to digest it all. But thankfully Chris Oddo has done just that and gives us his take on the match, the atmosphere, the performances of Nadal and Zverev, and what's likely in the immediate future for the Spaniard.

Day 2 winners

While Alexander Zverev was taking care of business on Chatrier, Coco Gauff made swift work of her first round match on Lenglen and Dan Imhoff was across that one to give us an assessment of the young American’s game.

Elsewhere, while the Rafa-Zverev drama was unfolding, there were wins for Matteo Arnaldi (who beat French No.29 seed Arthur Fils), Italian No.12 seed Jasmine Paolini, No.15 seed Ben Shelton, No.18 seed Karen Khachanov, No.11 seed Danielle Collins and No.20 seed and former runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Rafa's Shot of the Day

Before he waved goodbye to Court Philippe-Chatrier, the great Spaniard treated us to one of his trademark forehand sledgehammers. Sit back and savour this moment of Roland-Garros Rafa magic 💥

18:45

Rafa: The place that I love the most

Rafa speaks to the Chatrier crowd after his defeat to Alexander Zverev, potentially his final appearance at Roland-Garros after making his debut here in 2005 when he won the first of his 14 men's titles.

18:37

Rafa's Roland-Garros legacy

Whether or not that was Rafael Nadal's last ever match in Paris, on social media the tennis world starts to reflect on what the Spaniard has achieved on the Parisian clay.

18:28

Result: Zverev beats Nadal 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3

Alexander Zverev finishes off a straight-sets victory over 14-time Roland-Garros champion Rafael Nadal in an incredible atmosphere on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The German took control of the match by edging a tight second-set tiebreak and overall played the bigger points better during the 3 hours and 5 minutes on court – saving nine of the 11 break points he faced – to come through 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3.

The result makes Zverev just the third person ever to beat Nadal at Roland-Garros, joining Novak Djokovic and Robin Soderling in an exclusive group of players.

18:17

Zverev* vs Nadal 6-3, 7-6(5), 4-3

German fourth seed Alexander Zverev has the finish line in sight now after breaking in the seventh game of the third set. To Nadal's credit it's been another very tight set, but the three-time Roland-Garros semi-finalist from Hamburg is now just a couple of holds away from the second round.

18:10

Clay confidence for Shelton

Over on Court 14, No.15 seed Ben Shelton came from a set down to take the win against home hope Hugo Gaston.

Playing in only his second Roland-Garros, the American is finding his feet on the red dirt and took his first title on the surface in Houston last month.

17:52

Catch a masterclass

Watch the highlights as Iga Swiatek swept past French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean earlier today on Chatrier.

17:33

Coco cruises

Over on Court Suzanne-Lenglen it's been a good start to the week for American Coco Gauff, the third seed in the women's draw and a runner-up here in 2022.

17:23

Zverev vs Nadal 6-3 7-6(5)

Alexander Zverev takes a stranglehold on the match by edging the second set tiebreak 7-5. Rafa had his chances in that set – he served for it at 5-4 only to be broken to love and he had two break points with the German serving at 5-5.

There wasn’t much to separate the two players in the shootout either when they swapped ends at 3-3. The fourth seed produced a winning drop volley to go up a mini break at 4-3 and came through a 19-shot exchange to extend that lead to 5-3.

A packed house was treated to a bit of Nadal magic with a rocket of a forehand pass to bring the scores back to 5-4 but a poor drop shot then left Zverev up 6-4 and with two set points. The right-hander converted the second of those to go up two sets to love.

Let's hear from Jannik

Having wrapped up the first round with a straight sets win over Christopher Eubanks, Jannik Sinner headed to the press room.

Everyone's glued to this...

17:00

Zverev vs Nadal 6-3 5-5

It was looking like Nadal would level the match when he stepped up to serve for the second set at 5-4 but Zverev produced a rock solid return game. The German fourth seed silences the Chatrier crowd with some heavy groundstrokes to break to love and level at 5-5. Big ten minutes coming up for Rafa...

16:35

Rafa makes a move

Alexander Zverev was threatening to go up an early break for a second successive set only for Nadal to produce one of his best games yet. Trailing 1-2 and down 15-40, the Spaniard dug deep to rattle off four successive points to level.

For the first time in the match Rafa gets pumped up and the crowd feeds off that energy. The 22-time Grand Slam winner then carves out a break point and converts with a drop shot for a 3-2 lead. Chatrier is getting loud.

16:14

Zverev up a set, Tsitsipas through

After just over 45 minutes Alexander Zverev breaks for a second time in the match to wrap up the first set against Rafael Nadal 6-3. The German’s early break in the first game set the tone and some big serving enabled him to keep his nose in front thereafter. Nadal battled hard to stay in the set but lost a long ninth game to drop serve for a second time.

Elsewhere on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, Stefanos Tsitsipas took control of his first round contest with Marton Fucsovics after a tight first set to ease through 7-6(7), 6-4, 6-1.

15:56

Sinner: Happy to be back on court

Earlier today Jannick Sinner moved through to the second round where he now faces Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

Nadal-Zverev build-up

What a noise as Rafa walked onto Chatrier, quickly followed by deafening chants of 'Rafa! Rafa!' during the warm-up with German opponent and fourth seed here Alexander Zverev.

It will be an 11th meeting between the two (Rafa leads 7-3 and 5-1 on clay) and this is a repeat of their 2022 Paris semi-final when Zverev sustained that awful ankle injury which kept him out of the remainder of that season.

The winner will face either Goffin or Mpetshi Perricard in the second round.
