Tsonga, Wawrinka punch their tickets to second round, along with top two seeds.

Two-time Roland-Garros semi-finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga posted his first match-win at Roland-Garros since 2016 with a 7-6(4), 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 success over Germany's Peter Gojowczyk, to set up a clash with No.7 seed Kei Nishikori, which would be a rematch of their epic five-set quarter-final here four years ago.

Stan Wawrinka, a champion in 2015, also battled through four sets to overcome Slovakian world No.132 Jozef Kovalik 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-3 and book a second-round meeting with in-form Chilean, Cristian Garin, who fought past 2.1m Reilly Opelka 7-6(0), 7-5, 7-6(7).

Top two seeds, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, were both untroubled in their openers against Poland's Hubert Hurkacz and Germany's Yannick Hanfmann, respectively, on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Djokovic cruised through 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 and faces Swiss lucky loser Henri Laaksonen next, while Nadal dropped just six games in his straight-sets rout of Hanfmann. He takes on another qualifier, also German, also named Yannick, in his next match - this time Yannick Maden.

A day after his doubles partner Nicolas Mahut pulled off a sensational comeback from two sets down, fellow Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert fought back from a two-sets-to-one deficit to upset No.12 seed Daniil Medvedev 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.

A quarter of Frenchmen joined Herbert in the second round as Richard Gasquet, Corentin Moutet, Gilles Simon and freshly-crowned Lyon champion Benoit Paire all claimed victories on Monday.

Dayana Yastremska, a champion in Strasbourg on Saturday, suffered an opening round loss to No.28 seed Carla Suarez Navarro 2-6, 7-6(0), 6-0.

Also scoring wins into the evening in Paris were three-time champion Serena Williams - a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 winner over Vitalia Diatchenko - and 2010 finalist Samantha Stosur, who beat Barbora Strycova in straight sets.
