Sinner's road to career slam

In the men’s singles this year, most are asking whether anyone can stop the red-hot world No.1 Jannik Sinner from completing a career Grand Slam.

The Italian starts against French wild card Clement Tabur. Chris Oddo scanned the men’s draw to analyse Sinner’s path to a potential fifth major singles title and first on the Paris clay

The women’s draw is led by world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka, who could meet four-time major champion Naomi Osaka in the last 16 and defending champion Coco Gauff in the semifinals.

Alex Sharp takes us through the big stories on the women’s side.

It’s an age-old tradition to pick out the most mouth-watering first round meetings and we’ve done exactly that across both lineups.

As for the serious business of fighting through three rounds of qualifying, 16 players are celebrating on Thursday night after making it mission accomplished.

Austria’s second seed Sinja Kraus was the first player through, and she was followed by the likes of former finalist Sloane Stephens and Egypt’s Mayar Sherif later in the day.

Dan Imhoff sat down with 30-year-old Sherif to hear about how she’s starting to rediscover her best tennis after a difficult few months.

At 29 years of age, Andrea Pellegrino delivered one of the greatest feel good stories of the day when he beat fellow Italian Marco Cecchinato in straight sets to reach a Grand Slam main draw for the first time.

“It’s a dream come true,” the world No.126 - who also reached the last 16 in Rome recently - told RG’s Alex Sharp.

Twenty-year-old Frenchman Thomas Faurel, Italy’s Federico Cina, American graduate Michael Zheng and Jaime Faria from Portugal - the man who beat Grigor Dimitrov in the opening round - all booked main draw spots.

Late on Thursday, French legend Gael Monfils and his friends thrilled a 15,000-strong sell out crowd inside Court Philippe-Chatrier during a spectacular night of tennis, music and entertainment to celebrate his career.

Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Elina Svitolina and Naomi Osaka were among a star-studded cast from the world of tennis.

Monfils is about to play his last Roland-Garros - he faces Hugo Gaston in the first round - before retiring at the end of the season.

The last of the third round qualifying matches take place on Day 5 of Opening Week on Friday. Alix Ramsay is back to pick a trio of tasty contests to look forward to.
