Sunday's news and action as the men's and women's singles draws got underway around the RG grounds
RG Live: Sunday May 24
News, photos and live updates from Roland-Garros 2026 on Day 1 of main draw action
Goodnight from Paris
We're just 15 minutes off the midnight hour here in the French capital so we'll call it a day after an action-packed few hours. Incredibly, we've still got one match on court as Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Lorenzo Sonego battle into the small hours. You can follow events on Simonne-Mathieu through our live scores.
We'll be back at 11am on Monday with more first round action.
In the meantime check out Alix Ramsay's Day 2 preview which is already live on the site. Rest up and see you for more clay court fun in a few hours...
Djokovic wins 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4
Three-time Roland-Garros champion Novak Djokovic figures it out in four sets to get past the dangerous Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on a muggy night on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The second set breakthrough was the key for the 24-time major champion and the 39-year-old danced for joy after smacking a forehand winner to wrap up a 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 win after two hours and 51 minutes.
The Serbian plays Frenchman Valentin Royer in the second round.

Novak hits cruise control
How many times have we seen this play out over the years? As soon as Novak Djokovic edged the tight second set, it's been one-way traffic. The Serbian races through the third set 6-1 and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard has had the physio out working on his right forearm. Looking good for the three-time champ.
Cirstea extends Paris career
Meanwhile on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, the soon-retiring Sorana Cirstea makes sure of at least one more match at Roland-Garros as she cruises past young French wild card Ksenia Efremova 6-3, 6-1. The 36-year-old from Romania plays Petra Marcinko or Eva Lys next.
Djokovic levels on Chatrier
Three-time champ Novak Djokovic is back in this match on a sticky night in Chatrier after eventually converting one of a number of chances during a tight second set that eventually went his way 7-5.
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard had clung on for as long as he could by saving nine out of nine breaks points. But he couldn’t save a tenth - a break point that doubled up as a fourth set point for the Serbian - and the world No.4 struck to level the match.
Mpetshi Perricard steals first set
The volume rises to ear-popping inside Chatrier as Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard pounces to break Novak Djokovic in the 11th game of the first set before serving it out 7-5. Long way to go, but we're on upset alert in the big house...
Nishesh on first top-10 win
Here's what the young man had to say in his post-match interview: "What a match. Taylor's obviously a great player, so super happy to get through that, especially after losing the third set. First French Open main draw, and all the support, it's incredible."
Basavareddy takes out Fritz
Young American wild card Nishesh Basavareddy regroups after missing a match point in the third set to roll past No.7 seed Taylor Fritz 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-1 for the biggest win of his career - and his first victory over a top 10 opponent. It's the first top eight seed to crash out of the draw after a difficult few months for Fritz as he's dealt with a persistent knee injury that kept him out of most of the clay season.

Djokovic and Mpetshi Perricard on court
The wait for the first night session of the tournament is over as three-time champion Novak Djokovic and his French opponent Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard walk into Court Philippe-Chatrier for their first round meeting on a balmy evening in the French capital. Follow the action with live scores below or with ball-by-ball commentary on Radio RG.
Fritz clings on, saves match point
No.7 seed Taylor Fritz was close to booking his ticket back to the US, but he's still hanging around on Lenglen after saving a match point in the third set tiebreak against young American Nishesh Basavareddy. The top 10 star converted his fifth set point to steal the shootout 11-9 and claw his way into a third set. Huge roar from TF when he won that set. Game on...
Carnival time
Joao Fonseca, the first Brazilian man to be seeded at Roland-Garros since Thomaz Bellucci in 2011, is through to the second round with a 7-6(6), 6-4, 6-2 win over French qualifier Luka Pavlovic.
The carnival atmosphere was as exuberant on Court Simonne-Mathieu as it was last year on Chatrier, when Fonseca beat No.30 seed Hubert Hurkacz.
Basavareddy a set away
World No.148 Nishesh Basavareddy is a set away from one of the biggest wins of his career, up two sets to love against fellow American Taylor Fritz on Lenglen. The wild card had a huge slice of luck at 5-5 in the second set tiebreak when he benefited from a dead netcord to give him set point. He now leads the No.7 seed 7-6(5), 7-6(5). Can he finish the job for a first top 10 win?
Head to Head: Djokovic vs Mpetshi Perricard
The countdown continues ahead of the first night session of the tournament which kicks off in just under an hour and a half on Chatrier. It's showtime at 20:15 in Paris...
Fritz in trouble
We could have our first big surprise of the day brewing on Lenglen where No.7 seed Taylor Fritz has lost the first set 7-6(5) against fellow American Nishesh Basavareddy. On Simonne-Mathieu, Brazil's Joao Fonseca did well to save a set point before edging an opening breaker against French qualifier Luka Pavlovic 8-6. On Court 13 former US Open champion Emma Raducanu trails Argentina's Solana Sierra 6-0 4-1.
Youngster Cina outlasts Opelka
It's a huge moment in the hot sun for young Italian qualifier Federico Cina who has outlasted American Reilly Opelka in five sets on Court 6 after 3 hours and 21 minutes. The 19-year-old gets his first taste of a win at a major after battling through three rounds of qualies during Opening Week. He plays Stan Wawrinka or Jesper de Jong in the second round.
Andreeva avoids another upset
Mirra Andreva sidestepped a second-straight defeat to a Frenchwoman in Paris as she eased past Fiona Ferro 6-3, 6-3 on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
In last year's quarterfinal, Andreeva succumbed to world No.361 Lois Boisson in front of vociferous French crowds, but it was a different story this time round.
She now plays the winner of the clash between Colombia's Emiliana Arango and Spanish qualifier Marina Bassols Ribera.

Teatime round-up
We're heading towards 6pm local (it's still boiling hot) and Mirra Andreeva is closing in on a straights set win over Frenchwoman Fiona Ferro on Chatrier, while No.7 seed Taylor Fritz is just starting on Lenglen against fellow American Nishesh Basavareddy. Young Brazilian star Joao Fonseca is another big name under way against French qualifier Luka Pavlovic on Simonne-Mathieu.
After Hailey Baptiste's recent narrow escape, there was no such luck for Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry who is the first seeded casualty of the tournament.
The South American No.23 seed crashed out to Portugal's No.1 Nuno Borges 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 on Court 13.
Great escape for Baptiste
Seeded for the first time at a Grand Slam event, Hailey Baptiste saved a pair of match points to defeat two-time major champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-7(7), 7-6(6), 6-2 on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.
Baptiste, who made the last 16 here last year, will now face Wang Xiyu in the second round.
Gladiator in the house
A-list actor Russell Crowe is a guest of Roland-Garros today enjoying the gladiatorial battles on Chatrier. Fun fact: RC loves his sport and is a fellow Leeds United fan. Good luck to the boys away at West Ham this afternoon 😉
Zverev clears first hurdle
No.2 seed Alexander Zverev moves through to the second round with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi on a sun-soaked Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Zverev now faces Czech Tomas Machac in the second round.

Time to celebrate
What it feels like to win a clay-court Grand Slam match after four hours and 5 minutes in 33c heat. Respect Foki 👏
Survival mode activated
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina knows his way around a five setter and he's come through another out in the Court 14 cauldron, this time against Damir Dzumhur 6-7(3), 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. The Spanish 21st seed has a tough second round date with Thiago Tirante from Argentina who'll be regularly smacking serves in the mid-140mph territory when they square off.
Under the lights: Novak returns
A quick reminder that three-time champ Novak Djokovic plays his first match tonight against big-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at 8.15pm on Chatrier. Have a look at Alix Ramsay's preview which sets the scene perfectly.
Tirante bringing the HEAT
The in-form Thiago Tirante has beaten Spanish qualifier Pablo Llamas Ruiz in four sets. Keep an eye on him during the next few days - he has wins over Tommy Paul, Flavio Cobolli and Ben Shelton in the last few weeks and clocked a 142mph serve out on Court 13 - easily the fastest of the day so far. If it stays hot in Paris, the conditions will suit him perfectly. The Argentine was among Dan Imhoff's 'Unseeded Danger Men' to look out for in the Paris draw this year.
Marathon men
We've got our first five-setter of the tournament out on Court 14 where Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has forced Damir Dzumhur into a decider. It's the Spaniard's 19th five-setter of his career at the Grand Slams - since 2020 only Taylor Fritz and Karen Khachanov have played more (20 each).
Dishing up a treat 🍴
This year, Roland-Garros is pulling out all the culinary stops. A brand-new area called the Jardin des Chefs has been set up in the gardens just a stone's throw from Court Simonne-Mathieu.
From 24 May to 5 June, some of France's greatest chefs and pastry-chefs, including several Michelin-star holders, will present their signature dishes, as well as exclusive recipes.
Every day from 11:30am to 3:30pm, two chefs will prepare two dishes each, while a third will make a dessert. In the evening, from 6pm to 10pm, the Jardin des Chefs will transform into a bodega-style restaurant, serving sharing platters created by the renowned chef Yves Camdeborde.
➡️ Read more about the Jardin des Chefs
Fans can also soak up the festive atmosphere and enjoy a relaxing break without missing any of the excitement.
The area also includes a cocktail bar serving this year's signature creation, a Magnum ice cream stand, a drinks kiosk, and a host of activities: a music quiz, live music, the unmissable Smash Corner, and even a unique virtual reality experience inside a hot air balloon, allowing visitors to admire the stadium from the sky.
Phew, what a scorcher!
It's roasting hot in Paris today which will make for fast, lively conditions on court. Players in action at the moment are battling 33c temperatures, and if the weather apps are to be believed it'll reach 34c on Monday. There's a bit of wind out there as well, so anyone on one of the less sheltered smaller courts will have to watch the ball closely and keep those feet moving. Challenging conditions today...
McNally fights back
Caty McNally is another who scored a satisfying win early on Day 1. The American was a set and 3-0 down against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, before recovering to win in three 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-3. The Cincinnati Kid plays Belinda Bencic in the second round.
No stopping Bencic
Belinda Bencic is the first winner on Court Philippe-Chatrier this year as the 11th seed sweeps past Austrian qualifier Sinja Kraus 6-2, 6-3 in exactly 90 minutes.
The Swiss star joins 27th seeded Czech Marie Bouzkova and China's Wang Xinyu in the second round - they both bagged victories in the last hour.
In the men's draw Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic is the latest player into the second round after a straight sets win over Hungary's Fabian Marozsan 7-6(0), 6-3, 6-4. He's quickly joined by 13th seed Karen Khachanov who was too strong for Frenchman Arthur Gea 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-0 over on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

Mondays’ Order of Play
We’ve still got lots of action to get through on Sunday, but here’s a heads up on what to expect at Roland-Garros on Monday.
Seeds in action include four-time RG champion Iga Swiatek against 17-year-old Australian wildcard Emerson Jones on Chatrier, men’s No.5 seed Ben Shelton meets Spain’s Daniel Merida on Suzanne-Lenglen, and 2024 women’s finalist Jasmine Paolini faces Dayana Yastremska on Simonne-Mathieu.
French fan favourite Gael Monfils headlines the night session on Chatrier in his final season on tour. As ever when Gael takes to court, it’s going to be a lively night - he faces fellow wildcard, compatriot Hugo Gaston.
Also playing out his final season is Stan Wawrinka, who plays second on Simonne-Mathieu against lucky loser Jesper De Jong.
Kostyuk cruises through
Marta Kostyuk hits the ground running early on Sunday in her first event since the biggest breakthrough of her career in Madrid. In her seventh appearance in Paris and at her highest ranking, the in-form world No.15 swept past Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-2 6-3.

Duckworth into round two
Aussie James Duckworth is the first player into the second round after his opponent Gabriel Diallo retired towards the end of the second set on Court 12. Duckworth was up 6-3, 4-1 when the Canadian pulled the plug. The Australian will play either Rafael Jodar or Aleksander Kovacevic.
Chatrier ready to roll
The opening Court Philippe-Chatrier match of the tournament is about to get under way at 12 noon local as 11th seed Belinda Bencic and Austrian qualifier Sinja Kraus get first round action started in the big house.
Later on the main show court Alexander Zverev faces Benjamin Bonzi, Mirra Andreeva goes against Fiona Ferro and tonight Novak Djokovic will battle Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at 8.15pm.

There’s a lot going on today with 40 matches scheduled. Where to start?
➡️ Alix Ramsay has pulled out a few of the highlights
Two of the 37 Americans in the singles draw (the most at Roland-Garros since 1995) are Sloane Stephens and Michael Zheng, who both came through qualifying last week.
➡️ Dan Imhoff found out more about Stephens’ off-court philanthropic work, for which she has recently been included in the Time 100.
Stephens meets Sara Bejlek later today on Court 6.
➡️ Alex Sharp spoke to Zheng about his time at Columbia University and how he missed his graduation ceremony to be at Roland-Garros.
Zheng comes up against Croatia's Dino Prizmic over on Court 9.
