Riske, the world No.83, had taken just three games off Halep in their only previous meeting on clay in Rome three years ago and had only ever won one match at Roland-Garros in four previous visits. But after reaching her first clay-court final in Nuremberg last week, the American was brimming with confidence, launching a series of blistering groundstrokes to earn an immediate break for a 2-0 lead.
