Arnaldi back on Friday

So it's an unexpected conclusion to the last men's quarterfinal and it’s the world No.104 Matteo Arnaldi who moves into his first semifinal at major level after a quite incredible run here in Paris. The good news for the 25-year-old from Sanremo is that he has a day off tomorrow before returning on Friday to play the biggest match of his career against his good friend and fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli. The men’s semifinal line-up is complete:

Berrettini retires trailing 5-7, 2-5

Matteo Berrettini simply can't take any more and with tears in his eyes has no choice but to retire trailing 5-2 in the second set. The injury Berrettini had treatment for at 2-1 earlier in the set had been worsening as the match wore on to the point where he could hardly run. Heartbreak for a guy who has suffered so many injuries in recent years. Arnaldi is into his first Grand Slam semifinal to play Flavio Cobolli.

We’re back…

There are no visible signs of any strapping as Berrettini resumes after the MTO off court. We’ll keep a close eye on his condition and movement but there's better news as MB holds to love to level at 2-2.

22:10

Medical time out for Berrettini

Worrying signs for Matteo Berrettini and his fans early in the second set as physio Stephane Vivier comes on court for a chat with the former top 10 star. They leave the court for an assessment of some sort of physical issue. And chair umpire Aurelie Tourte confirms a three-minute medical time out has begun off court.

Arnaldi has a narrow lead and is ahead 7-5, 2-1 on serve.

Arnaldi grabs marathon first set 7-5

Against all the odds, Matteo Arnaldi has taken the first set in his quarterfinal against fellow-Italian Matteo Berrettini.

Berrettini lost no time in stamping his authority at the start of the set, going swiftly 3-0 double break up in the space of 15 minutes. But Arnaldi moved things up a gear, bringing the fight to his compatriot and took the next four games on the trot before Berrettini could get another look-in.

Arnaldi then struck again with Berrettini serving at 5-6 to break and seal the set.

After 17 hours and 42 minutes on court coming into this match, Arnaldi has somehow survived yet another marathon set that lasted 76 minutes. He’s an iron man.

Cobolli beats Auger-Aliassime 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4

Italy’s Flavio Cobolli is a Grand Slam semifinalist and will move into the top 10 in the world after his four-set victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime under the Chatrier roof on Wednesday evening.

The Italian 24-year-old hit back from losing the first set to storm back to a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory to move into his first semifinal at major level.

Cobolli will play either Matteo Berrettini or Matteo Arnaldi in Friday’s semifinals which guarantees an Italian presence in the men’s final on Sunday.

The youngster from Rome began the event as the world No.14 and moves up to No.10 in the live ATP list, the highest ranking of his career.

"It's been the best week of my life," the Italian said on court.

Cobolli in the driving seat

Back over to Chatrier, and Flavio Cobolli needs just a single set to move into a first Grand Slam semifinal as the 24-year-old from Rome wins the third set against fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime to go ahead 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. He wraps up the set with a clever serve-volley combo and roars in celebration towards his box. He's feeling it today.

Sabalenka: I got into a deep, deep dark hole

Aryna Sabalenka has been into the main press conference room to talk about her shock quarterfinal defeat to Diana Shnaider earlier today. Understandably, the world No.1 was in a reflective mood after losing the last 10 games to the world No.23 on her way to a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 loss.

“No thoughts, no emotions, just wanna quit tennis right now but we’ll see, we’ll see in a few days hopefully I’ll get back on track mentally," she said.

“I feel like I had very decent opportunities in the second set. I screwed up, then she stepped in and played great.

“I feel like mentally I couldn’t really recover after the second set. I think that was the biggest mistake from me.

“I don’t know when was the last time that happened to me when I lost 10 games in a row. Mentally I got into a deep, deep dark hole over there and I just couldn’t get back mentally on track.”

17:11

Felix strikes first

After an enthralling 61 minutes on Chatrier, it's No.4 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime who hangs tough to break Flavio Cobolli in the 10th game to wrap up the opening set 6-4 in the third men's quarterfinal. The two men swapped breaks in the opening two games playing in, at times, pretty wild and windy conditions before the Canadian later stepped up to convert his second set point when a Cobolli forehand missed the mark.

The Chatrier roof is closing as they prepare for the second set, which will make life easier down on court. We'll see how that changes the dynamics once the second set gets under way. Felix is one of the best in the business with a roof over his head.

All-Italian showdown under the lights

Matteo Berrettini is firing, fit and ready for his quarterfinal against compatriot Matteo Arnaldi on Chatrier tonight from 20:15.

With a career beset by injury, Berrettini hasn't competed at Roland-Garros since he reached the quarterfinal here in 2021 but is healthy and enjoying his run this year. Arnaldi has spent a whopping 17 hours and 42 minutes to get to this stage in Paris; weary legs could be a factor.

➡️ Day 11 Under the lights: Berrettini 'pumped, happy and ready to compete'

It's the first time two players outside the world top 100 have met in a Grand Slam quarterfinal since Pat McEnroe (114) vs Cristiano Caratti (101) at the Australian Open in 1991.

Auger-Aliassime and Cobolli on court

Next it's the turn of Canadian No.4 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and Italy's No.10 seed Flavio Cobolli to deal with the Chatrier wind that seems to be strengthening as the day goes on. This is the third men's quarterfinal after wins for Alexander Zverev and Jakub Mensik yesterday. Another two Italians play tonight when Matteo Berrettini and Matteo Arnaldi fight for a semifinal spot at 20.15.

Diana Shnaider on-court interview

15:51

Shnaider's moment of victory

First Grand Slam semifinal, first win over a world No.1. Take a bow, Diana Shnaider...

15:42

Shnaider beats Sabalenka 3-6, 7-5, 6-0

The world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka is out of Roland-Garros at the quarterfinal stage as world No.23 Diana Shnaider fights back against the four-time Grand Slam champion in yet another seismic shock here in Paris.

Despite struggling with the breezy conditions throughout, Sabalenka led by a set and 4-1 and was two points from victory when she served for the match at 5-4 in the second set before the left-hander started to turn things around.

Shnaider won four games in a row to snatch the second set, and then won a crucial 17-point second game of the third set which helped her pull clear. She finished the match by winning 10 games in a row from 3-5 in the second set.

Shnaider is into her first Grand Slam semifinal to play Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska. With Sabalenka out, we’re guaranteed a brand new Grand Slam champion in the women’s draw.

One of Diana Shnaider, Maja Chwalinska, Marta Kostyuk or Mirra Andreeva will be Roland-Garros champion on Saturday evening.

Defending champs into SF

There are some big doubles going on today and the men's defending champions Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos are into the semis with a straight-sets win. They play Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori who saved two match points in their quarterfinal yesterday. No.2 seeds Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten are also into the last four. The last quarterfinal is currently taking place on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

There are two women's doubles quarterfinals also on the schedule as well as two mixed doubles semifinals. The mixed doubles final takes place on Thursday at 12 noon when we'll hand out the first piece of silverware.

Shnaider steals second set 7-5

Wow, who saw this coming? Aryna Sabalenka has a job on her hands on Chatrier as world No.23 Diana Shnaider recovers from a set and 4-1 down and Sabalenka serving for the match at 5-4 to snatch the second set 7-5.

The world No.1 is becoming increasingly frustrated with the quality of her game and the challenging windy conditions as her unforced error count continues to rise.

In contrast Shnaider is getting better and better as she works her way back into this quarterfinal, and is the significantly calmer of the two players as we head into a final set.

This is anyone's right now. Does Diana Shnaider believe she can get this done and book a first Grand Slam semifinal? Follow through the links below...

14:48

Shnaider sticking around

This second set has a similar feel to the first in that Sabalenka built a lead and, at the moment, is watching it disappear. The top seed looked good at a set and 4-1 double break, but Shnaider broke for 4-2 and fights through her next service game to get it back to 4-3. Sabalenka still has a break, but it's tense out there. Still all to play for...

First set Sabalenka 6-3

Aryna Sabalenka made the perfect start, breaking for 3-1 with a backhand winner and quickly building on that advantage for a 5-1 lead but struggled to close the set in the tricky, breezy conditions.

The top seed missed two set points and was eventually broken when she was serving at 5-1 before Shnaider stayed in it with a hold for 5-3. The No.25 seed even had a break point to get it back to 5-4 but missed a forehand wide before Sabalenka finally wrapped it up 6-3 after 47 minutes.

The conditions are making things interesting. So often wind can prove to be a leveller and Sabalenka showed signs of frustration towards the end of that set.

Qualifier Chwalinska into RG semis

Poland's Maja Chwalinska continues her fairytale in Paris as the qualifier ranked No.114 in the world moves into the final four after a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Anna Kalinskaya.

She's now won eight matches since arriving for qualifying at the start of Opening Week and will play either world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka or Diana Shnaider on Thursday.

The lefty's run here in Paris takes her to No.30 in the live rankings, a jump of 84 places in the WTA list.

The 24-year-old arrived in Paris with only two clay court tour level wins. She's just the second qualifier to reach the women's semifinals here in the Open era.

Tuesday recap

Ten days of main draw action and the tireless RG reporters are still going strong.

Before the day’s quarterfinals, Chris Oddo perused some of the stats from the first four rounds and uncovered all sorts of nuggets. His first assignment on court delivered a businesslike showing from No.2 seed Alexander Zverev who ended the dream run of Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar in straight sets. Then, while looking at the juniors draw, eagle-eyed Chris spotted that 18-year-old Keaton Hance hails from the same town in California as women’s world No.17 Iva Jovic… Chris obviously couldn’t let that go uninvestigated.

Dan Imhoff took the first quarterfinal as 19-year-old Mirra Andreeva swept past Sorana Cirstea, in the Romanian’s last RG before she retires from the WTA tour. A legend himself some would say, Dan then headed out to meet some of the tennis legends who are here to play the exhibition matches this year. Former world No.1 Lindsay Davenport gave him her take on how Aryna Sabalenka has learned to deal with setbacks

With no dogs to interview on Tuesday, Alex Sharp had the more poignant job of watching as Elena Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk met in an all-Ukrainian quarterfinal, with Kostyuk emerging to ensure that there would be a Ukrainian woman in the semifinal for the first time in the Open era. Alex then headed out around the grounds to watch the first day of wheelchair action and caught up with Japanese superstar Tokito Oda who talked about his quest for the calendar Grand Slam this year.

Our regular night owl Victoria Chiesa was ready for the action under the lights as Czech cool customer Jakub Mensik met Brazilian livewire Joao Fonseca. Mensik was in control all the way, despite a brief whiff that Victoria might have to settle in when Fonseca threatened to push it to a fourth set.

Lee Goodall wrapped things up and got a relatively early night.

Action on Chatrier

No.22 seed Anna Kalinskaya and Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska have got things underway on Chatrier. It's the Pole who's in control - serving for the set at 5-1 up.

11:00

Welcome to Day 11

Where has the time gone?

There are four more quarterfinals today with action including three Italians, a No.1 seed and a qualifier. All play starts at 11:00.

That qualifier is Poland’s Maja Chwalinksa, the world No.114 whose best result from her only two Grand Slams was a second-round showing at Wimbledon in 2022. Now she’s in the quarterfinals having taken down Zheng Qinwen, Elise Mertens, Maria Sakkari and Diane Parry. Today she faces Anna Kalinskaya for a place in the semifinal.

After that, No.1 seed Aryna Sabalenka faces Diana Shnaider - Sabalenka is laser-focused on the "beautiful" trophy and Shnaider is going to "try to enjoy" it. They're followed by the first of the Italians, tenth seed Flavio Cobolli, who meets No.4 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Canadian is playing in his seventh Roland-Garros, Cobolli in his fourth.

➡️  Day 11 Match of the day: Is experience key?

The night session brings an all-Italian clash between two Matteos - Berrettini and Arnaldi.

Berrettini is ranked world No.105 and Arnaldi is 104. The last Grand Slam quarterfinal between two players ranked outside the ATP top 100 was Pat McEnroe (114) vs Cristiano Caratti (101) at the Australian Open in 1991.
