On a tough day for Jannik Sinner, Italian tennis ends Day 5 on a more positive note as Matteo Arnaldi joins Berrettini in the round of 32 with a four-set win over Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 on the sunken Court 14.

And that result brings play to a close. What a day in Paris, a Thursday at RG that will be remembered for the exit of world No.1 Jannik Sinner. That seismic shock is still sinking in around this clay-court major.

22:55

Matteo and Mboko move on

It turned into a satisfying night session for former top 10 star Matteo Berrettini who was always in control against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech during a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory under the Chatrier lights.

Women's No.9 seed Victoria Mboko from Canada had to work a little harder to come from a set down to beat Czech Katerina Siniakova 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

American Brandon Nakashima has just survived a late one on Court 7, the 31st seed from California getting past Frenchman Luca Van Assche 6-3 in the fifth after over four and a half hours.

That leaves one more match on court - former finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas and Italy's Matteo Arnaldi are into a fourth set on Court 14 at gone 11pm.

Collignon takes down Shelton

Men's No.5 seed Ben Shelton is out after losing in straight sets to Belgium's Raphael Collignon. The world No.62 was at the top of his game en route to his second top 10 victory, clinching a spot in the third round with a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 scoreline to set up a meeting with either Matteo Arnaldi or Stefanos Tsitsipas.

On Chatrier, meanwhile, Matteo Berrettini leads Arthur Rinderknech 6-4, 6-4 and Victoria Mboko and Katerina Siniakova are about to start a deciding set over on Simonne-Mathieu.

Cirstea's 'living the dream'

While Matteo Berrettini goes up by a set and a break on Chatrier against Arthur Rinderknech, once more we have one eye on Friday and Day 6. One of the third round matches on the Friday schedule (2nd on Court 14) will see Sorana Cirstea facing Argentina's Solana Sierra. Chris Oddo chatted to the Romanian about her final season on tour.

Shelton and Mboko behind

Ben Shelton goes two sets to love down on Lenglen as Raphael Collignon breaks at 5-5 in the second and serves out for a 6-4, 7-5 lead over the No.5 seed. Women's ninth seed Victoria Mboko is also behind after dropping the first set against Katerina Siniakova 7-5 on the greenhouse-surrounded Simonne-Mathieu. Italy's Matteo Arnaldi leads Stefanos Tsitsipas by a set and a break. Anastasia Potapova has forced a decider against Katie Boulter.

Kostyuk's winning coach connection

There are four Ukrainian women into the third round at Roland-Garros, and one of that quartet, Marta Kostyuk, was a recent champion in Madrid during the run-in to Paris.

Reem Abulleil sat down with her Polish coach, Sandra Zaniewska, to dig a little deeper into their relationship and Kostyuk's potential ahead of her third round meeting on Friday with Swiss Viktorija Golubic.

Shelton losing, night match under way

Yet another top seed, world No.5 Ben Shelton, is under the pump and losing by a set against Belgian Raphael Collignon. The 24-year-old world No.62 played a great opener to seal it 6-4 on Lenglen.

On Chatrier the Berrettini-Rinderknech night match is now under way and the Italian has struck early to break first after three games played.

Elsewhere, Canadian top 10 star Victoria Mboko is on court with Czech Katerina Siniakova, and Britain's Katie Boulter is a set up on No.28 seed Anastasia Potapova.

Italy vs France

We're not too far away from another night session under the Chatrier lights. Matteo Berrettini and Arthur Rinderknech will be out not before 20:22...

Aryna and Coco through

Two big names in the women's draw finish within 10 minutes of each other as defending champion Coco Gauff and top seed Aryna Sabalenka both move into the third round.

World No.1 Sabalenka had to fight through a tough first set and manage a high energy, partisan Chatrier crowd before seeing off home hope, 23-year-old Lyonaise Elsa Jacquemot 7-5, 6-2.

No.4 seed Gauff was made to work harder than her scoreline would suggest as she ground down Egyptian qualifier Mayar Sherif 6-3, 6-2 on Lenglen.

"Paris has been my favourite city since I was 10," Gauff enthused.

Sinner: 'It's tough to accept'

After today's big shock in the men's singles when world No.1 Jannik Sinner lost in five sets to Juan Manuel Cerundolo, RG's Chris Oddo sat in on the Italian's post-match press conference.

“I struggled, starting to feel very dizzy. Very low of energy," Sinner said.

Vamos Landaluce

It'll be young Spaniard Martin Landaluce who will play Jannik Sinner's giant-killer, Juan Manuel Cerundolo, on Saturday. The 20-year-old from Madrid fights back from two sets down to beat Vit Kopriva 1-6, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-0. Cerundolo and Landaluce will battle for a spot in the last 16 in two days' time.

World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka is just starting against Elsa Jacquemot on Chatrier. It's tight on Lenglen, where Coco Gauff is on serve with Mayar Sherif with the American ahead 3-2 in the first set.

Big Foe's big win

2025 quarterfinalist Frances Tiafoe wins yet another RG marathon amid a wild atmosphere on Court 14 as he fights past Hubert Hurkacz 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-4 after four hours and 43 minutes. Hubi smacked down 43 aces, but the American raised his game over the closing stages and celebrated like a man possessed, ripping off his shirt and screaming towards his fans in the Paris sunshine.

Sinner speaks

Jannik Sinner faces the press after his shock five-set defeat to Juan Manuel Cerundolo on Court Philippe-Chatrier earlier today.

17:22

There's more in store

It's been an emotional day here at RG, but we're not nearly done yet. Under the lights tonight on Court Philippe-Chatrier is French No.22 seed Arthur Rinderknech, who faces Italian former world No.6 Matteo Berrettini.

17:11

The view from the outside

Not everyone could be on Court Suzanne-Lenglen to watch Moise Kouame defeat Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in five...

17:04

Grabher retires

No.6 seed Amanda Anisimova is through to the third round with the retirement of her opponent Austria's Julia Grabher after the first set on Lenglen.

Anisimova will next face either No.30 seed Ann Li or France's Diane Parry, who are currently battling it out over on Chatrier, with Parry having taken the first set 6-3.

16:59

A new chapter

Away from the drama on Chatrier and Lenglen, book-loving Argentinian Thiago Agustin Tirante is relishing his first run to the third round here in Paris.

Kouame thanks his fans

“I just have one word to say: Thank you! This victory belongs to you. Quite honestly, without you, I would never have won this match, never! I don't think you realise how much you supported me. Physically, you're even more exhausted than I am, you gave it your all, and it worked, so thank you.

“Last year I watched the final where Carlos Alcaraz saved three match points. He said he never stopped believing. Today, when I found myself down 3-5, broken in the fifth, I never stopped believing.”

Around the grounds

Time to catch our breath and bring some scores as we head towards teatime in Paris. Ann Li and Diane Parry are just starting on Chatrier, while Frances Tiafoe is up two sets to one and has a break late in the fourth against Hubert Hurkacz on Court 14.

On Court 7, Maria Sakkari and Claire Liu are locked at 5-5 in the first set, and Anna Kalinskaya and Alina Korneeva are in a first set breaker on Court 6.

Slovakia's Vit Kopriva is ahead two sets to love against Martin Landaluce with the winner to play Juan Manuel Cerundolo - the man who beat Jannik Sinner earlier.

Kouame survives Vellejo thriller

The big stories and quite incredible matches keep on coming on Day 5. As Cerundolo's earth-shattering win starts to sink in around the grounds, over on Court Suzanne-Lenglen the newest hero of French tennis, 17-year-old Moise Kouame, outlasts Paraguay's Dani Vellejo in a deciding tiebreak after a mind-boggling four hours and 56 minutes on court - the longest match of the tournament so far. Kouame was 5-3 down in the fifth set before a miraculous 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6[10-8] turnaround to book a third round spot against Chile's Alejandro Tabilo on Saturday. Lenglen has to be seen to be believed right now.

PARTY TIME IN PARIS!

15:44

Cerundolo beats Sinner 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1

Jannik Sinner's 30-match win streak comes to a dramatic end as world No.56 Juan Manuel Cerundolo fights back from two sets and 5-1 down to beat the Italian in five. The story of the match however was Sinner's physical struggles that struck when he was just a game from victory in the third set. From that moment, he had nothing in the tank. The world No.1 will have to wait another year to try to land a maiden Roland-Garros trophy. Cerundolo moves into the third round of a major for the first time and will play either Martin Landaluce or Vit Kopriva. This result blows the men's draw wide open.

15:32

Cerundolo closing in

World No.56 Juan Manuel Cerundolo is getting closer to the biggest win of his career as he builds a 4-0 final set lead against Jannik Sinner on Chatrier. Time is running out for the top seed who surely hasn't got the physical strength to turn this around from here. The South American must be given a lot of credit for the way he's playing right now, and how he's managing the situation mentally. He's never made the third round of a major.

Cerundolo breaks, Kouame fighting

Drama everywhere right now. Cerundolo breaks in the opening game of the fifth with a couple of killer lobs and then holds for 2-0 to take control early against Sinner, and the noise coming from Lenglen right now is deafening as Moise Kouame and Dani Vallejo are battling deep into a fifth set. Kouame breaks with Vallejo serving for the match at 5-3 in the decider and the stadium goes nuts. All to play for over there...

We're into a fifth

Jannik Sinner's condition is not improving and Cerundolo takes the fourth 6-1 to get into a decider with the world No.1 on Chatrier. Has the Italian got anything left to make this fifth set competitive or is his 30-match win streak that goes back to February about to come to an end?

14:58

World No.1 still hurting

Jannik Sinner looks a tiny bit stronger as the fourth set gets under way but is still slow, his shot speed is down and is clearly still hurting during any kind of longer rally. Every now and again he walks to the tiny bit of shade at the back of the court for a little relief. Sinner has three chances to break Cerundolo in the third game but the world No.56 sees them off and then hits an ace for a 2-1 lead.

14:33

Cerundolo wins the third

What an incredible few minutes. This looked like the most routine win for world No.1 Jannik Sinner but now he has a real mental and physical battle on his hands. With Cerundolo trailing 6-3, 6-2, 5-1, Sinner's physical problems allow the Argentine to mount a remarkable comeback by winning six games in a row to take the third set 7-5. So we're into a fourth set. The Italian leaves the court at the set break and must recover quickly in the 32c heat or his tournament could be over.

Sinner in trouble physically

After leading by two sets and 5-1, the world No.1 from out of nowhere starts to struggle physically in the heat and doesn't win another point as Juan Manuel Cerundolo levels at 5-5. Sinner's serve speed has dropped, his legs look wobbly and the top seed can hardly move right now. He even disappeared with the physio and doctor off the court during the tenth game before the South American got back out, broke again and levelled the set. Cerundolo then holds for a 6-5 lead. The Italian's title bid feels extremely shaky right now.

Thursday update

On Lenglen Dani Vallejo has taken the third set off French teen Moise Kouame 6-3 so it's game on over there.

Hubert Hurkacz has just taken the opening set off Frances Tiafoe on Court 14.

Players already through and into the round of 32 include Noami Osaka, Iva Jovic, qualifier Jaime Faria, Flavio Cobolli, Zach Zvajda and Oleksandra Oliynykova to make it four women from Ukraine into the third round.

Thursday results

13:17

Second set for Kouame

French 17-year-old Moise Kouame has taken the second set against Adolfo Daniel Vallejo on a packed Court Suzanne-Lenglen - he rightly looks quite pleased with himself. If he takes the third, he'll be through to the third round and an encounter with Chile's Alejandro Tabilo, who received a walkover in the second round with the withrawal of Valentin Vacherot.

Over on Chatrier, Sinner is a set and double break up against Juan Manuel Cerundolo as the clock has just ticked over the hour mark. He's on course for a third-round clash with either Martin Landaluce or Vit Kopriva.

13:03

Third round berth for Osaka

Those outfits seem to be working... No.16 seed Naomi Osaka is through to the third round in Paris for the first time since 2019 with a 7-6(1), 6-4 win over Croatian Donna Vekic.

She will now face American 18-year-old Iva Jovic, who beat her compatriot Emma Navarro earlier today.

12:55

Birrell's table-turning

Having lost the first set 6-3, world No.83 Australian Kimberley Birrell, who saw off No.5 seed Jessica Pegula in the first round, has taken the second set 6-0 against Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova.

This is Birrell's first foray into the second-round in Paris, and if she wins this, it'll equal her best result at a Grand Slam - a third-round appearance in Melbourne in 2019.

12:43

Jovic through

Iva Jovic has defeated US compatriot Emma Navarro 6-0, 6-3 over on Court 14 to move into the third round and a meeting with either Donna Vekic or Naomi Osaka. At the moment this looks like that might be No.16 seed Osaka, who is currently one set up, but it's early days.

We'll keep you posted.

What happened on Wednesday

On a hot and balmy Day 4 in Paris, second-round matches got underway, shaking things up in the men’s and women’s singles draw.

Our reporters once again slapped on the sunscreen and headed out to see what was going on.

Chris Oddo started his day on Court Simonne-Mathieu, watching No.11 seed Belinda Bencic - playing in her first Roland-Garros since becoming a mother to daughter Bella - take a 6-4, 6-0 win over the USA’s Caty McNally. He finished his day on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, as a “crisp, lively and efficient” Casper Ruud booked his spot in the third round. And like all good reporters, Chris has a very enquiring mind - when he wasn’t watching tennis he set out to find out how this week’s heat is transforming the clay.

Dan Imhoff took his seat on  Chatrier first up to watch Czech lefty Sara Bejlek try unsuccessfuly to find a way past Iga Swiatek. He then got into the carnival mood and joined the exuberant crowds on Court 14 as Brazil’s Joao Fonseca came back from two sets down to beat Croatian Dino Prizmic.

Alex Sharp watched Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva clinch the biggest win of her career as she downed No.2 seed and Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina. He then sat down for a chat with the world No.55 to find out what she really thought about it all. An excellent multitasker, he also kept a watching eye on Novak Djkovic, who was busy over on Chatrier amassing more records as he beat Frenchman Valentin Royer.

Our regular night-owl Victoria Chiesa was on the case as the lights came on for Alexander Zverev’s 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 win over Tomas Machac.

With so much going on on Wednesday, Lee Goodall had quite a lot to sum up in his daily wrap
