Gaston wins 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-0

For a while it looked like Gael Monfils might extend his Roland-Garros stay for a little longer when he fought back from two sets to love down against fellow Frenchman Hugo Gaston.

But on a hot night in the French capital, the physical effort eventually catches up with the 39-year-old and it's Gaston who goes through 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-0 a few minutes before midnight local time.

Afterwards, Monfils is honoured with an on-court ceremony in front of a packed and adoring Court Philippe-Chatrier after his final appearance on Paris’ famous show court.

23:22

On we go...

The comeback is on. Mr Gael Monfils isn't quite done here in Paris as he races through the fourth set 6-2 to take Hugo Gaston into a decider. Monfils is buzzing, the music is pumping, the Chatrier crowd is loving it and Gaston's head must be spinning right now. We have a one-set shootout for a spot in the second round. Follow live scores or tune in through Radio Roland-Garros.

22:52

Monfils takes the third

He couldn't could he? Gael Monfils comes to life towards the end of a 43-minute third set that he eventually grabs 6-3 to leave him trailing by two sets to one as we approach 11pm in Paris. During the last 15 minutes he's started to use this huge Chatrier crowd for extra energy and it seemed to make the difference towards the end of that chapter. We've got a match on our hands...

Gaston leads 6-2, 6-3

A gripping, physically exhausting second set goes the way of Hugo Gaston after 54 minutes. First Gaston went up a break, then back came Monfils. When Gaston called for the physio at 4-3 everyone was wondering whether that would have a bearing on the next few minutes, but after a quick consultation he left his courtside bench and immediately broke for 5-3 before serving it out without much fuss. Huge task for a tired-looking Monf now on a muggy, energy-sapping night in Paris.

Monfils struggling on Chatrier

Chatrier is packed with familiar faces from French tennis all wondering whether this might be Gael's last hurrah on this famous court. Richard Gasquet, Sebastien Grosjean, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Yannick Noah are some of the more recognisable among the crowd as Gaston breaks for 6-2 3-1.

21:08

Gaston gets ahead

Hugo Gaston has dealt the first blow in his attempt to suppress the Monfils magic, taking the first set 6-2 under the lights on Chatrier in front of a vocal crowd who are loving the show.

It’s Monfils’ 19th and last Roland-Garros, but it’s still early days. The 39-year-old is displaying flashes of his trademark brilliance and the fans in the packed stadium will be wanting this to go the distance.

Iron man Ruud digs deep

Somehow - and don't ask me how - Casper Ruud has survived in five sets to get past Roman Safiullin 6-2, 7-6(5), 5-7, 0-6, 6-2 in just under four hours. He finally seals it on his sixth match point after missing FIVE towards the end of the third set. From visits by the doctor and barely being able to walk during the fourth set, the Norwegian used all his experience to save every ounce of energy for the decider against an opponent who was also experiencing physical problems. Ruud, who has reached two finals in Paris in recent years, must now recover in time to play dangerous young Serb Hamad Medjedovic in the second round.

Monfils vs Gaston under way

All eyes on Chatrier now for the next couple of hours as Gael Monfils and Hugo Gaston come out to entertain. Will it be Monfils' final match at Roland-Garros?

Ruud-Safiullin into a fifth

Back to the drama on Simonne-Mathieu where Roman Safiullin - who's also had the trainer out - takes the fourth set 6-0 off Casper Ruud, who can barely move right now. They both disappear for a bathroom break ahead of a decider.

Meanwhile, another two men's seeds are through - in different fashion. Ben Shelton beats Spain's Dani Merida 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 and Andrey Rublev outlasts Peru's Ignacio Buse in four physical sets over 3 hours and 39 minutes. One can only imagine Buse must've been exhausted after only winning the Hamburg ATP 500 title 48 hours ago.

19:52

Ruud in trouble

Worrying pictures from Simonne-Mathieu where the doctor is out for Casper Ruud. The Norwegian two-time RG finalist looked to be cruising when he was up two sets to love and 5-2 against Roman Safiullin. But he missed five match points, eventually lost the third set 7-5 and is an early break down in the fourth.

Mixed doubles draw made

The Italian dream team of Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori are top seeds in the 2026 mixed doubles draw which was released on Monday evening. Errani and Vavassori open against the Aussie-Portuguese pair Ellen Perez and Francisco Cabral as they bid to defend the trophy they picked up 12 months ago. They'll be going for a fourth Grand Slam mixed title after back-to-back wins in New York in 2024 and 2025.

Head to Head: Monfils vs Gaston

There's just over an hour to go until Monday's night session when Gael Monfils starts his last campaign at Roland-Garros. The former semifinalist goes up against fellow Frenchman Hugo Gaston at 20:15.

18:31

Evening catch up

As we enter early evening (it's still 31c at 6.30pm), there's plenty of drama across the RG clay.

Saturday's Hamburg champion Ignacio Buse has just nicked a second set tiebreak off Andrey Rublev 8-6 on Court 7, while Rome runner-up Casper Ruud is a set up on Roman Safiullin on Simonne-Mathieu.

No.5 seed Ben Shelton is about to get going on Lenglen against Madrid native Dani Merida.

Former champion Jelena Ostapenko has an early break against Germany's Ella Seidel on Court 6, one of only two women's matches currently under way.

Aussie Aussie Aussie

Australia's Thanasi Kokkinakis is Monday's marathon man as he survives four hours and 18 minutes in temperatures reaching 33c in Paris to beat Frenchman Terence Atmane 7-5 in the fifth set.

After trailing 5-2 in the decider, TK's reward for coming through the longest match of the tournament so far is a second round date with Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta, who shocked Jiri Lehecka earlier. It's the Adelaide native's first Grand Slam win since the 2025 Australian Open.

Emotional send-off for Stan the Man

Ever-popular 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka has played his last match at Roland-Garros, going down 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on a scorching Court Simonne-Mathieu in front of excited and supportive crowds.

An on-court presentation and video tribute featuring friends including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic rounded off an undoubtedly memorable occasion for the 41-year-old Swiss, who had been bidding to become the oldest man to win a singles match in Paris since 1973.

Tuesday's order of play

There's another action-packed day in store on Tuesday as first round singles matches continue.

No.1 seed Aryna Sabalenka opens proceedings on Chatrier against Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, and last year's women's champion Coco Gauff also starts her RG2026 campaign, facing compatriot Taylor Townsend.

Over on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, men's No.6 seed Daniil Medvedev kicks things off against Australian wildcard Adam Walton, and keep an eye out for Naomi Osaka, who has hinted at a fashion statement when she takes on Germany's Laura Siegemund.

French fans on Court Simonne-Mathieu will be cheering for exciting teenager Moise Kouame - tipped as the next top prospect in this tennis-rich nation - as he takes on 37-year-old Marin Cilic, who is contesting his 18th Roland-Garros.

Under the lights, it's time for No.1 seed Jannik Sinner to make his entrance - to face French wildcard Clement Tabur.

15:25

RBA bids au revoir

Roberto Bautista Agut waves goodbye to Roland-Garros after defeat to American Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 on Court 9. It is the former world No.9's final appearance in Paris ahead of his retirement later this year. The 38-year-old, who made the fourth round twice here in 2016 and 2017, in mid-April announced his decision to end his playing days later in 2026.

“I want to feel and appreciate the support of the people, to compete one more time in the tournaments that have been part of my life, and to say farewell on court, which is where I’ve always been happiest,” he said.

RBA has won 12 ATP titles and reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2019, the same season he was part of the winning Spanish Davis Cup team on home soil in Madrid.

Fan favourites in farewell season

Two popular players in their final season on the professional tour are both in action today.

Headlining the night session on Chatrier, 39-year-old Gael Monfils, playing in his 19th Roland-Garros, faces fellow Frenchman Hugo Gaston.

During Opening Week, Monfils hosted a star-studded evening - Gael & Friends - a spectacular night of tennis, music and entertainment.

On the Saturday before the tournament, Monfils first played an integral part at the Roland-Garros annual charity fundraiser Yannick Noah Day, before speaking to the press about his final tournament here in Paris.

And the French fan favourite also sat down for a Q&A with Roland-Garros Magazine

2015 champion Stan Wawrinka is also playing his last Roland-Garros - his 21st campaign here in Paris. He’s up second on Court Simonne-Mathieu and will face lucky loser Jesper De Jong of the Netherlands.

RG writer Alex Sharp spoke to Stan ahead of the tournament about his career and aspirations for RG 2026.

In case you missed it

There was so much going on at Roland-Garros on Day 1 that we will forgive you if a couple of things slipped through the net.

Here’s a summary of the action:

➡️ In the day’s big upset, world No.148 Nishesh Basavareddy stunned No.7 seed Taylor Fritz on Court Suzanne-Lenglen 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-1 in the biggest match of the 21-year-old wildcard’s career. “What a match,” Basavareddy said afterwards. What a match, indeed.

➡️ Earlier in the day, Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk beat Oksana Selekhmeteva to seal her 13th successive win on clay and move through to the second round.

➡️ Men’s No.2 seed Alexander Zverev eased through in his match against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi and will now face Czech Tomas Machac.

➡️ Hayley Baptiste downed 2021 Roland-Garros champion Barbara Krejcikova - saving two match points in the process.

➡️ Putting last year’s disappointment of losing to world No.361 Lois Boisson behind her, Mirra Andreeva had no problems getting past French wildcard Fiona Ferro

➡️ The carnival atmosphere returned to Roland-Garros as Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca took on French qualifier Luka Pavlovic. It was loud, it was packed and it was a straight sets victory for Fonseca

➡️ Under the lights of Court Philippe Chatrier, Novak Djokovic held off the threat of big-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, fighting back from a set down to move through to the second round as he bids to win a 25th Grand Slam title.

That’s a lot of reading for you. If you’re pushed for time, Lee Goodall wrapped it all up here.

Welcome to Day 2 at Roland-Garros

➡️  Here are some top picks from RG writer Alix Ramsay

Court Philippe-Chatrier gets underway at 12pm with Australian wildcard Emerson Jones taking on No.3 seed Iga Swiatek.

And there’s a treat in store for the night session, which starts at 20:15. It’s an all-French affair between two wildcards - 25-year-old Hugo Gaston faces Gael Monfils, who is competing in his 19th Roland-Garros and playing out his final season on the professional tour.

It’s going to be LOUD 🎉
