Sunday’s trophy match in Paris marked the first time that the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds have met in the men's doubles final at Roland-Garros since 2012, and neither team had dropped a set en route.

Top-seeded Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos refused to budge.

The defending champions put on a shotmaking clinic to lock down their third major title, and second in Paris, with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over second-seeded Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten.

“This is part of a long journey together,” Zeballos said. “It’s a beautiful time that we are spending, not only tournaments but also every day that we go to practise. Hopefully we’ll stick together for a long time.

“I’m 41 years old and this is one of the best moments of my career, so it’s never too late for anybody.”

Granollers and Zeballos are the first team to win the men’s doubles title in Paris without dropping a set, and the first to successfully defend the Roland-Garros men’s doubles title since 2020.

The duo lost their first three major finals as a team, but have now claimed three of the last five men’s doubles Grand Slam titles.

It was an uphill battle for two-time major champions Heliovaara and Patten from the start of their first career RG final. Heliovaara was broken twice in the first set as Granollers and Zeballos asserted themselves under the roof on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

A beautiful stab volley by Granollers gave the Spanish-Argentinian duo the break for 4-3.

Moments later a perfect serve by Zeballos set up a poach by Granollers to finish the opening set with a love hold in 45 minutes.

In the second set, Patten double-faulted on break point in the first game, handing a third break to Granollers and Zeballos. The Buenos Aires native then extended the lead with one of the prettiest backhands of the match, a beautifully angled topspin crosscourt winner for 3-0.

Heliovaara and Patten recovered one of the breaks, but it was then Granollers' turn to put the nail in the coffin – the Spaniard artfully angled a backhand return that flew over the net post and kissed the sideline for a fourth break and an insurmountable 6-4, 4-1 lead.

Granollers and Zeballos closed out the match on serve three games later, capping a run to their 16th career title as a team.

There is consolation for Heliovaara and Patten, as they will rise to No.1 in the ATP doubles rankings for the first time after the tournament.

“I really think that you deserve to be No.1,” Granollers told the team. “Now is your time and you deserve it as a team.

“Also, thank you to my partner, for fighting with me for seven years," he added. "We have good moments and bad moments, but here we are with two titles in a row at Roland-Garros."
