Considered from a very young age as one of Romania’s brightest prospects, Sorana Cirstea belongs to that rare breed of players capable of shining on all surfaces, thanks to an aggressive, eye-catching brand of tennis. The owner of a remarkably solid career, often disrupted by injuries, she has set herself apart through her longevity at the highest level.

Born on April 7, 1990, in Bucharest, she picked up a racket at the age of four and quickly made her mark on the junior circuit, relying on her baseline aggression and natural power. A finalist in the girls’ doubles at Roland-Garros in 2007, she broke through to the wider public the same year with a WTA final in Budapest, aged just 17. Cirstea soon broke into the Top 100, then the Top 50, following her maiden title in Tashkent in 2008. Her rise gathered pace in 2009 when she reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros, notably defeating world No.5 Jelena Jankovic along the way. A few weeks later, she also reached the fourth round of the US Open, confirming her ability to deliver on the big stage.

Hampered by recurring physical setbacks, the Romanian has nevertheless always shown remarkable resilience in returning to the highest level. That determination paid off with a second career title in Istanbul in 2021, thirteen years after her first. A long wait during which she still produced several standout performances, including three victories over Top 10 players – Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki and Li Na – to reach the final of the Toronto WTA 1000 in 2013. Back in the spotlight more recently with a quarter-final run at the US Open in 2023 and two further titles in Cleveland (2025) and Cluj-Napoca (2026), the player coached by Adrian Cruciat matched her career-high ranking of No.21 after a semi-final appearance at the Rome WTA 1000.

Armed with a relentlessly aggressive game, she looks to take control from the very first blows, using her forehand power and her ability to take the ball early. Solid on serve, highly consistent and efficient off the backhand wing, Sorana Cirstea – who announced in December 2025 her intention to retire at the end of the 2026 season – continues to rely on her experience and attacking instincts to remain a dangerous opponent on tour.
