Karolina Pliskova was made to fight in her Roland-Garros 2020 opening round on Tuesday, rallying from a set down to overcome Egyptian Grand Slam debutante Mayar Sherif 6-7(9), 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 15 minutes.

Sherif, who is the first Egyptian woman in history to contest a Grand Slam main draw, saved eight set points in a 56-minute first set to take the lead before the Czech No.2 seed struck back to draw level.

In the decider, Pliskova got a crucial break on her sixth opportunity of a marathon seventh game to inch ahead 4-3 and it was all she needed to book a spot in the second round against Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.

A former semi-finalist in Paris, Pliskova arrived to the tournament carrying a left thigh injury that forced her to withdraw ahead of her Rome final last week, but will be pleased with how her body has responded in her opener on Tuesday.

Former champion Ostapenko enjoyed a comfortable start to her 2020 campaign, easing past American Madison Brengle 6-2, 6-1 in just over an hour.

Ostapenko hadn't won a match in Paris since she lifted the title on Court Philippe-Chatrier in 2017 but is gathering form on clay this month following her quarter-final appearance in Strasbourg last week.

Danish 17-year-old Clara Tauson produced a huge upset on her Grand Slam main draw debut, taking out US Open semi-finalist and No.21 seed Jennifer Brady 6-4, 3-6, 9-7 in two hours and 45 minutes.

Tauson, last year's Australian Open junior champion, fought from 2-4 down in the final set and saved two match points en route to a heroic victory.

In a rain-interrupted duel on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin needed two hours to shake off a stiff challenge from Russia's Liudmila Samsonova and move into the second round.

The American No.4 seed triumphed 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to set up a clash with Romanian Ana Bogdan.

"A win's a win. It doesn't matter how you win - ugly, pretty, doesn't matter. Just that you win," Kenin said after her topsy-turvy opener.

Over on the men's side, Italian No.7 seed Matteo Berrettini was untroubled against Canadian Vasek Pospisil, breezing through 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 and takes on South African Lloyd Harris next.

Chilean No.20 seed Cristian Garin was tested by German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber but advanced to round two with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Garin next squares off with Australian lucky loser Marc Polmans, who ousted an in-form Ugo Humbert 6-2, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
