Sunday’s news, results and big stories as the fourth round of the men’s and women’s singles gets going in Paris
RG Live: Sunday May 31
News, photos and live updates from Roland-Garros 2026 on Day 8 of the main draw
Third set Ruud 7-5
Just as Joao Fonseca looked like he was closing in on a spot in the RG quarterfinals, Casper Ruud digs his heels in and breaks in the 12th game of the third set to steal it 7-5. Fonseca now leads 7-5, 7-6(8), 5-7 as we head towards midnight in Paris.
Serving at 5-6 15-30, Fonseca missed a routine forehand in the net to hand Ruud two set points and the Norwegian converts the second with a dipping forehand that the advancing Brazilian can’t pick up off his toes. Into the small hours we go...
Mensik survives in five
Jakub Mensik strikes in the eighth game of the decider to break to put him 5-3 ahead and serving for a spot in the quarterfinals and the 20-year-old holds his nerve to move into the last eight at one of the four majors for the first time in his career.
The final game wasn’t without its drama however as world No.27 Mensik saved two break points before scrambling over the line 6-3, 7-6(6), 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 after three hours and 45 minutes.
Great tennis, big crowd, great drama late in the evening. Mensik plays Casper Ruud or Joao Fonseca on Tuesday.
Fonseca leads Ruud 7-5, 7-6(8)
What a second set on Chatrier. Joao Fonseca puts himself a set away from a first major quarterfinal by squeezing through an 81-minute set 10-8 in a thriller of a tiebreak. The Brazilian converted his fourth set point, saving three along the way. Those two sets have taken 2 hours and 19 minutes. On we go…
Top seed out of girls' singles
The junior draws kicked off on Sunday, writes Chris Oddo, and already the top seed on the girls’ side has been upset. If you’re scoring at home, the boys’ singles tournament at Roland-Garros dates back to 1947, while the first girls’ event took place in 1953.
Among former champions are Ivan Lendl, Jennifer Capriati, Fabrice Santoro, Martina Hingis, Stan Wawrinka, Justin Henin, Gael Monfils and Coco Gauff.
Top-seeded Ksenia Efremova, who won the girls’ singles title at the 2026 Australian Open, was upset by Ekaterina Dotsenko, 6-3, 6-3. A tough day for the 17-year-old, who defeated Ekaterina Tupitsyna in Melbourne in January to become the second French player to win the girls’ singles in Melbourne.
Last week WTA No.623-ranked Efremova played the women's main draw in Paris, losing to Sorana Cirstea, 6-3, 6-1.
The top seed on the boys' side is Brazil’s Guto Miguel. The 17-year-old will open his bid to become the first Brazilian to win a Roland-Garros junior title on Monday against Japan’s Hyu Kawanishi.
Miguel is one of three players from Brazil to be seeded inside the top 5, along with No.4 seed Victoria Luiza Barros and No.5 seed Nauhany Vitoria Leme Da Silva in the girls’ draw.
Rublev fighting back
Andrey Rublev is slowly but surely turning his fourth round match with Jakub Mensik back in his favour on Court Suzanne-Lenglen as the time moves past 10.30pm.
From two sets down he won the third set 6-4 and the fourth 6-2 to give us yet another five-set match here at RG.
Big credit to Rublev who’s putting in a strong mental performance out there late in the evening.
Mensik in charge against Rublev
Jakub Mensik wins a big second set 7-6(6) on Lenglen to build a two-set lead over Andrey Rublev. He needs just one more set for a first major QF. Rublev has been battling to keep his emotions in check for the last few minutes with ongoing exchanges with the chair umpire and there’s another brief back and forth before he disappears to the bathroom.
It’s tight over on Chatrier as well where there’s been nothing to separate Joao Fonseca and Casper Ruud in their first set. Fonseca breaks the Norwegian in the 12th game to take the first set 7-5 after 53 minutes. RG great Guga Kuerten - who's in the crowd tonight - is on his feet.
Champions of Europe
Mensik up a set, Chatrier ready to roll
Young Czech Jakub Mensik has been a man on a mission inside Lenglen so far this evening taking the first set off Andrey Rublev 6-3 after 44 minutes. The 20-year-old quickly built a lead and clocked 15 winners to keep Rublev under pressure. Mensik is looking to move into his first major quarterfinal this evening.
It’s time for the night match on Chatrier as Joao Fonseca and Casper Ruud get ready to walk out into an electric atmosphere. We’ll keep you across that one as the evening unfolds.
Svajda: 'I always play for him'
For Zach Svajda, 2026 has been a year of navigating grief and a blossoming tennis career. His victory over Francisco Cerundulo on Saturday coincided with his late father's birthday, and he knows his dad helped him get over the line.
Fonseca vs Ruud showdown coming up
Tonight’s night session features two players who have already each had two five-set marathons to get to this point. The key to victory could well come down to who has been able to recover the best. Ruud is bidding to reach the quarterfinals here for the fourth time in his career, Fonseca is already further than he’s been at any Grand Slam.
Match at 20:15 - we’ll bring you all the updates.
Andreeva in a hurry
Mirra Andreeva produces a very focused performance to get through Swiss Jill Teichmann in the Lenglen early evening sunshine. The first six games were very competitive before the 19-year-old put her foot down to win 6-3, 6-2. Her reward is a meeting on Tuesday with a player 17 years her senior when she steps on court with Romania’s Sorana Cirstea.
In the next match on Lenglen Andrey Rublev goes in search of an 11th Grand Slam quarterfinal when he plays Czech Jakub Mensik.
The next match on Chatrier is at 20.15 in just over an hour when Joao Fonseca is back to play Casper Ruud.
Zverev sets Jodar clash
Alexander Zverev remains the highest ranked player in the men’s draw as the world No.3 sees off a stubborn Jesper de Jong 7-6(3), 6-4, 6-1 to spoil the Dutchman’s 26th birthday.
"Once I found my rhythm, I felt very comfortable on the court," Zverev said.
It’s an eighth Paris quarterfinal for the German, who reached the final here in 2024.
The 29-year-old is one step closer to what could be a first Grand Slam title. He plays Spain’s Rafael Jodar in the last eight. Four down, three to go…
Zverev cruising
Alexander Zverev takes the second set 6-4 in his Chatrier fourth round match with Jesper de Jong to build a two-set lead. Our man Chris Oddo was among the fans near the Suzanne Lenglen statue and completely by chance bumped into Jesper's Dad, Paul, who told Chris it's his son's birthday today. Read Chris' assessment of who the fans here think will win the men's singles title below.
Which man will lift the trophy?
The next match on Lenglen is under way between No.8 seed Mirra Andreeva and Swiss world No.170 Jill Teichmann, who beat 10th seed Karolina Muchova on Friday.

Jodar beats Carreno Busta
Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar is into his first Grand Slam quarterfinal as he fights back from two sets down to beat fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 6-2 in the fifth set.
Jodar continues his breakthrough clay season during which he won the Marrakech ATP event, reached the semifinals in Barcelona, and now quarterfinals in Madrid, Rome and here in Paris. He moves to No.22 in the ATP live rankings.
The 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 win means the Madrid youngster is 19-3 for the clay season and he’ll play either Alexander Zverev or Jesper de Jong in the last eight.
Zverev steals the first set
We've just witnessed key passages of play in both of the men's matches currently on court as a bit of light rain falls on the clay (the heatwave broke here overnight and it's 22c today).
On Chatrier Alexander Zverev came back from 3-0 down in the first set tiebreak against Dutchman Jesper de Jong to win seven points in a row to pocket the opening chapter 7-6(3).
Meanwhile on Lenglen, they're just resuming after a short break to close the roof with Jodar up an early break at 2-1 in the final set in his Spanish derby with Pablo Carreno Busta.

A wide-open men's draw
With no-one in the men's singles draw this week called Jannik, Carlos or Novak, who do we think is going to lift the Coupe des Mousquetaires next Sunday?
The indefatigable Chris Oddo headed out into the grounds to ask just that question.

Jodar fighting back, Zverev under way
There are two men's matches on court as we approach late afternoon in Paris and the Lenglen contest has the feel of a five-setter as Rafa Jodar takes the third set off Pablo Carreno Busta and grabs an early break in the fourth. PCB has had the physio out working on his right arm.
On Chatrier, No.2 seed Alexander Zverev made a slow start against Dutch lucky loser Jesper de Jong, quickly trailing 3-0 but the former finalist has woken up and it's back on serve at 3-3 first set.

PCB rolling back the years
Let's hop over to Lenglen next door and check in on the Spanish derby where Pablo Carreno Busta, perhaps surprisingly, is up two sets against the new kid on the block Rafa Jodar.
Former top 10 player and two-time US Open semifinalist PCB is ahead 6-4, 6-4 and it's 1-1 in the third after just over two hours.
We have much cooler conditions today in Paris where it's overcast and currently 22c.

Svitolina beats Bencic 4-6, 6-4, 6-0
No.7 seed Elina Svitolina sets up a quarterfinal meeting with fellow Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk after fighting back to beat Belinda Bencic from a set down 6-0 in the third in a touch over two hours.
It’s a sixth RG quarterfinal for the 31-year-old. The result guarantees a first Ukrainian woman in the RG semifinals in the Open era.
“Happy Mother’s Day to everyone and to Belinda as well,” Svitolina said. “It’s amazing we’re both mums.
“[This tournament] couldn’t be better for us and it’s an amazing achievement for Ukrainian tennis.”
Svitolina taking control
With one Ukrainian already through after Marta Kostyuk beat Iga Swiatek earlier, Elina Svitolina looks determined to join her compatriot in the last eight as she wins the second set against Belinda Bencic 6-4 and breaks early for a 3-0 lead in the decider.
On Lenglen, 34-year-old Pablo Carreno Busta took charge quickly against fellow Spaniard Rafa Jodar by grabbing the first set 6-4, and he’s built a 4-2 lead in the second. He could be moving into his first major quarterfinal since 2020.

Bencic eyes last eight
Recent Rome champion Elina Svitolina is in trouble against Swiss Belinda Bencic who is striking the ball beautifully on Chatrier.
Bencic sees an early lead disappear but makes a move at 4-4 to wrap up the opener 6-4 and is a set away from her first RG quarterfinal.
On Lenglen Spanish youngster Rafa Jodar has made a fast start against countryman Pablo Carreno Busta to lead 4-2 first set.

Happy Mother's Day 💐
As the last Sunday in May, it's Mother's Day here in France. What better way to honour the occasion than with two tennis mums - Elina Svitolina and Belinda Bencic - facing each other on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Monday's order of play is out
By the end of another set of eight fourth-round matches on Monday the quarterfinals will be decided.
With all courts starting at 11:00, Anastasia Potapova, who stunned defending champion Coco Gauff on Saturday, opens on Lenglen against Anna Kalinskaya. Over on Chatrier, in-form No.10 seed Flavio Cobolli gets things underway against Zach Svajda, who came through a gruelling five-set encounter in the third round against Francisco Cerundolo.
The night session will feature two four-time Grand Slam champions in the form of women's No.1 seed Aryna Sabalenka who faces No.16 seed Naomi Osaka.
Sorana: I have so much passion
Cirstea back in the QF
There’s no stopping Romania’s Sorana Cirstea here in Paris as the 36-year-old - who is still planning on retiring this season - beats Chinese qualifier Wang Xiyu 6-3, 7-6(4) to reach her second RG quarter-final.
It’s SEVENTEEN years since Cirstea first reached the last eight here back in 2009. Mirra Andreeva or Jill Teichmann await.
Maybe the No.18 seed will change her mind about hanging up the rackets if she goes all the way.
Marta: I want to keep enjoying
Iga out, Kostyuk through
Marta Kostyuk has increased her unbeaten run on clay this season to 16 and moves into the quarterfinals in Paris for the first time with victory over four-time RG champion Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1.
"I want to keep enjoying," Kostyuk said, "I don't want to focus on winning or losing."
Enjoy it Marta.
Dancing queen
Marta Kostyuk seems pretty pleased about taking that first set against Iga.
High drama on Saturday
There were times on Day 7 when we didn’t know where to look there was so much going on. Thankfully, as ever, our tireless reporters were there to make sense of it all.
Alex Sharp took the opening match on Chatrier, and watched as football fan Flavio Cobolli put in a dominant performance to defeat the USA’s Learner Tien. Afterwards, the Italian was more concerned with talking about that night’s upcoming Champions League final than the match he had just played.
Chris Oddo spent the morning on Lenglen as Naomi Osaka - walking out in another spectacular outfit - met 18-year-old Iva Jovic, progressing through to the second week with a 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-4 win. He later returned to Lenglen and settled in for the treat that was French teenager Moise Kouame’s meeting with Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo. It didn’t disappoint, with Tabilo securing his second week ticket with a fourth-set tiebreak. Ever curious, Chris also took some time to peruse the men’s draw, which is full of opportunity; for the first time since 1968 no former Grand Slam champions have made it through to the last 16.
Osaka will now meet Aryna Sabalenka, who Dan Imhoff watched in her third-round match on Lenglen as she moved past Daria Kasatkina. Dan then hotfooted it to Chatrier, where defending champion Coco Gauff was on court to face Anastasia Potapova, who put in a “scrappy yet defiant” performance to dash Gauff’s hopes of a second consecutive title.
In the night match under the lights on Chatrier, Felix Auger-Aliassime, who performed such a miraculous escape from German Daniel Altmaier in the first round, moved into the second week with a win over the USA’s Brandon Nakashima. Another player to reference the Champions League final, won by Paris club PSG, FAA called the result “a great evening for me and all Parisians.” Victoria Chiesa wrote it all up for us.

Kostyuk getting into the groove on Chatrier
Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk has taken the first set in her fourth-round match against No.3 seed and four-time RG champion Iga Swiatek - breaking the Pole in the last game.
Kostyuk has found her groove on clay in recent weeks, and is undefeated in her last 15 matches on the surface.

Bonjour from Paris
It’s the last day of May and the first day of the Roland-Garros 2026 second week.
There are eight fourth-round singles clashes today, with all courts getting underway at 11:00.
Four-time RG champion and No.3 seed Iga Swiatek opens on Chatrier against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, who is currently on a 15-match winning streak on clay.
➡️ Day 8 Match of the Day: Clay-court credentials
Over on Lenglen, No.18 seed Sorana Cirstea kicks things off against Chinese qualifier Wang Xiyu, who has not dropped a set all tournament. Other players in action on Sunday include Elina Svitolina, men’s No.2 seed Alexander Zverev, Rafael Jodar and Mirra Andreeva.
The evening session on Day 8 is also lining up to be a corker - No.15 seed Casper Ruud meets Brazil’s 19-year-old Joao Fonseca. Both have already come through two gruelling five-set matches in the first three rounds, and it was Fonseca who ended the RG title hopes of Novak Djokovic on Friday.
Elsewhere, it's the first day of juniors. Matches include girls' No.1 seed 17-year-old Ksenia Efremova, who was knocked out in the first round of the main draw by Sorana Cirstea, in action on Court 6 against qualifier Ekaterina Dotsenko.
Keep checking back.
