That doubles partner you have a great understanding with? They’ve got to be a Cancer. That hitting partner who doesn’t quite challenge you the way you need them to? A Sagittarius, no doubt. And what about that really tough opponent you always seem to come up against at tournaments and who never lets up? An Aries for sure. We’ve read the stars right above the Roland-Garros stadium complex to find out what your star sign says about the tennis player you are. Welcome to your 2022 Roland-Garros horoscope!

Aries (21 March - 20 April)

You’re full of energy on the court and your relentless style is your biggest asset and your opponent’s biggest nightmare. You’re aggressive with it and you’ve got absolutely no intention of letting up on them. You never (NEVER!) give it anything less than your all. Aries are dominant! They walk on court determined to fight it out and it shows.

Motto on the court: “Run more and better than my opponent”

Aries players (women): Maria Sharapova, Marguerite Broquedis, Clara Burel, Jennifer Brady

Taurus (21 April - 20 May)

Like the bull that you are, you enjoy nothing more than playing on clay. That doesn’t mean to say that you’re not versatile, though. You can adapt to any surface! A tenacious type, nothing is more important to you than having fun on court. While it’s true that can sometimes make you a little (or very) compulsive, you know better than anyone that a Grand Slam is better when things are going well, the crowd are on their feet cheering you, and the wins are coming thick and fast.

Motto on the court: “Stay in control.”

Taurus players (women): Kristina Mladenovic, Ashleigh Barty, Aryna Sabalenka, Veronika Kudermetova

Gemini (21 May - 20 June)

You love to compete. You’re easily motivated and it doesn’t take much to get you going. You can’t help but be drawn to things that make you feel alive. You love winning. You’re a machine on the court and nothing can stop you. Geminis have a canny knack of reaching that world No.1 spot and staying there for a long, long time. As a self-respecting air sign, you are literally everywhere on the court. Your inability to stay put for very long is as much a source of anxiety for you as it is of creativity. Make no mistake, you’re the hyperactive type.

Motto on the court: “Never give up.”

Cancer (21 June - 22 July)

Cancer is a tough nut to crack on the court and covers every inch of it. When another sign comes up against you, they’d be well advised not to plan any post-match activities – the rallies could last for hours. Heavy hitting aside, you’re as good as anyone at playing with finesse and style. The fact that you listen to your emotions means that you understand yourself better and learn about yourself in every situation. You know how to defend in every point and you don’t expose yourself to danger needlessly. That’s because you’ve thought everything through in advance.

Motto on the court: “Grind them into the dust.”

Cancer players (women): Caroline Wozniacki, Amélie Mauresmo, Jil Teichmann, Marketa Vondrousova

Cancer players (men): René Lacoste, Pablo Carreño Busta, Adrian Mannarino, Arthur Ashe

Leo (23 July - 22 August)

You know all about pressure – the pressure you exert on your opponents and the pressure you put on yourself. To keep performing at the highest level, you train hard. And let’s face it, dear Leo, you take a lot of pride in what you do and you do not tolerate mediocrity on the court. It’s a lot to ask in the heat of a Grand Slam match and it can lead to you asking a lot of your opponents. Do you rule the court?

Motto on the court: “Live up to your ego.”

Leo players (women): Victoria Azarenka, Karolina Muchova, Alona Bondarenko, Anabel Medina-Garrigues

Virgo (23 August - 22 September)

Consciously or not, you see everything and feel everything: the little details, the balls that clip the line, your opponent’s tics, the weighty silences, moments of electricity, magical points, and misplaced serves. You are the embodiment of unfailing intelligence, you rely on logic to anticipate every point, and it takes a lot to make you lose your (apparent) calm. You are the champion of doing things fast and doing them well.

Motto on the court: “Do it fast, do it well.”

Virgo players (women): Elina Svitolina, Leylah Fernandez, Vera Zvonareva, Maureen Connolly

Virgo players (men): Dominic Thiem, Gustavo Kuerten, Gaël Monfils, Carlos Moya

With your audacity and daredevil charisma, you know how to steal the show when you’re on court. The Stade Roland-Garros is the best possible setting, the fans are amazing, and you can’t help but share your love for tennis and beautiful play. Let’s be honest here, Libra – you can’t play tennis without giving it your absolute all. The relentless type? You bet! Right to the very end!

Motto on the court: “Fight for every point.”

Scorpio (23 October - 22 November)

You’re one of those people who burns with ambition. Passion, being in the thick of it, and winning are what drive you on. The little obsessive inside you forces you, often quite rightly, to keep on going and going. After all, it ain’t over till the umpire says, “Game, set and match”. Your superpower is your ability to push your own boundaries and you use it to dig deeper into yourself than ordinary mortals. The upshot of all that? You want to win, and badly, but you’re not afraid of looking inwards.

Motto on the court: “Onwards and upwards.”

Scorpio players (women): Sofia Kenin, Ana Ivanovic, Billie Jean King, Emma Raducanu

Scorpio players (men): Boris Becker, Taylor Fritz, Fernando Verdasco, Ken Rosewall

Sagittarius (23 November - 21 December)

More than any other player, you have the ability to plan your way to victory and to do so with real drive and determination. In other words, when you put your mind to something, there’s no stopping you. It’s a case of playing the right point at the right time! The here and now is your mantra. It’s in your skin, your mind, and your racquet. When you’re about to step on court, you feel as if you’re setting off on an adventure, ready for come what may.

Motto on the court: “Stay patient. My time will come.”

Sagittarius players (women): Monica Seles, Chris Evert, Barbora Krejčíková, Danielle Collins

Capricorn (22 December - 18 January)

You love analysing, reflecting on and sharing things with your fans and putting all your tactics into practice. You can go all the way on court, play for hours on end and still not get tired. No one takes more pleasure than you from a perfectly executed set and a healthy playing environment where the focus is on fair play. Your powers of concentration at tournament time are virtually unrivalled, and your idea of great tennis is giving your all to win a game, a set, a match and, why not, an epic final.

Motto on the court: “Believe.”

Aquarius (19 January - 18 February)

One of the mavericks on the Tour, you’re often a step ahead of your opponents. You showcase all your inventiveness when you’re on court, coming up with strategies that are just impossible to second guess. It can be exhausting more often than not! Feel a little bit lonely in your patch of red clay, Aquarius? Yes, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

You’re totally at ease with yourself, with who you are, your style of play, your losses, your wins, your moments of self-doubt, your speed of serve, with everything. You’re an inspiration to others – to your contemporaries and the next generation.

Motto on the court: “No fear.”

Aquarius players (women): Simonne Mathieu, Alizé Cornet, Anhelina Kalinina, Pauline Parmentier

Pisces (19 February - 20 March)

Resilience is most probably your strongest suit and your biggest strength. Yours is a mutable sign. No one is better placed than a Pisces to avoid drowning or, in tennis terms, an out call. Relaxed about the way you play, you can walk the tightrope between tough times and great achievements. OK, so consistency is not your strong point, but you always seem to get that surprise break and get back into the game, often without knowing when or how.

Motto on the court: “Win against the odds.”

Pisces players (women): Sloane Stephens, Nathalie Dechy, Jelena Jankovic, Cori Gauff

Pisces players (men): Lucas Pouille, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Nikoloz Basilashvili, Ivan Lendl
