No.1 seeds Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend proved why they are the top team on tour by capturing their first Roland-Garros women’s doubles title as a pair on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Doubles world No.1 Siniakova and No.2 Townsend edged past the second-seeded pairing of Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic 6-2, 7-5 to collect their third Grand Slam title as a team.

Sunday’s trophy success posts Siniakova’s fourth women’s doubles crown in Paris following title runs in 2018, 2021 (with Barbora Krejcikova) and 2024 (with Coco Gauff). Townsend can now erase heartbreak from her RG 2023 final defeat alongside Leylah Fernandez.

“This tournament is really, really beautiful, really special,” said Townsend. “This is some of the best tennis in the world, we’re the best players in the world – No.1 and No.2 seeds – we work hard, we sacrifice so much, this means a lot.

“It really has been a long seven weeks away for me, being away from my son for a lot of firsts with school, camp, so it really does mean a lot to be able to bring this trophy home to him. Hopefully he’s proud of me.”

The American then addressed her partner, who has now won an impressive 11 women’s doubles majors.

“Kat, this has been fun. I’m really enjoying being by your side, not only as a team, but getting to know each other. Sharing these moments together strengthens our bond.

“I’m so grateful for this day, so happy, No.3 together, No.12 or 11 for you, whatever, we’re still counting. Let’s go!”

Townsend’s blazing backhand pass, dipping low into the right tramline, earned the opening break for 3-2. The American’s power combined with Siniakova’s net game cemented their dominance.

The Kazakhstani-Serbian combination, who also finished as Roland-Garros runners-up last June, fought back in the second set. Krunic managed to curl a magnificent defensive lob over the top seeds en route to an early 2-0 lead.

Krunic was spearheading the comeback with a crisp forehand drive volley building a 4-1 advantage.

In response, Sinakova and Townsend proved their major credentials to dominate the exchanges at close quarters, with all four players at the net.

Back on serve at 4-5 15-40, Townsend rattled through four points behind her own delivery to evade danger at two set points down. In the next game, the 30-year-old rebounded not one, but two Danilina overheads as the catalyst for a pivotal break at 6-5. Siniakova then served it out with ease.

“I think it just got into me what I just achieved,” said Siniakova, wiping away tears during the trophy ceremony.

“Standing here reminds me of winning my first Grand Slam here in 2018. I’m really enjoying this team work, on and off the court. I’m really enjoying this journey.”
