Born on 9 October 2002 in Atlanta, Georgia, Ben Shelton comes from a family deeply rooted in tennis. He is the son of Bryan Shelton, a former professional player and highly respected college coach, and Lisa Shelton, who also played collegiate tennis. This sporting environment shaped his early years. Raised in Florida, he honed his skills in the American college system before breaking onto the international stage.

As a junior, Shelton did not follow the same highprofile path as other prodigies, choosing instead to develop through the NCAA circuit. He won the 2022 singles championship representing the University of Florida, a turning point that accelerated his transition to the professional tour. His rise on the ATP tour was fast. In 2022, he claimed three Challenger titles, propelling him into the world’s Top 100. He made an immediate impression in Grand Slam competition by reaching the third round of the US Open that same year.

The following season marked a major leap forward. In 2023, he reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and then the semi-finals in New York, becoming the youngest American man to reach the US Open last four since Michael Chang in 1992. That year also brought his first title, an ATP 500 trophy in Tokyo. In 2025, after advancing to the semi-finals in Melbourne and the quarter-finals at Wimbledon – both times losing to eventual champion Jannik Sinner – he captured his first Masters 1000 title on the hard courts of Toronto.

Now a well established member of the Top 10, Shelton’s game is built around one of the most powerful serves in tennis (regularly exceeding 220 km/h), paired with an explosive forehand, relentless baseline aggression and fierce competitiveness. These strengths allow the lefthander, who does not hesitate to surge forward to the net, to challenge the best players in the world week after week.
