Highlights of the tournament

La décima for Rafa! Rafael Nadal’s dreams finally came true! At age 31, the Majorcan achieved an incredible feat that had seemed almost unattainable just a couple of years earlier: winning his tenth title at the Porte d’Auteuil. Nobody could get in the way of this new victory. The Spaniard soared through the tournament, allowing his opponents to snatch just a handful of games and refusing to drop a set over the whole fortnight. This domination continued into his final against Stan Wawrinka, where Nadal crushed his higher-seeded opponent in straight sets. 

Meanwhile, Jelena Ostapenko caused a sensation in the women’s draw. The Latvian player defied all predictions, becoming the lowest-ranked woman to ever win the title (No.47). Backed into a corner by Romania’s Simona Halep in the final, she managed to turn the situation on its head to clinch victory in three sets (4-6 6-4 6-3). After finishing runner-up in 2014, this was the second time that Halep had fallen at the final hurdle at Roland Garros.
