Highlights of the tournament
Novak Djokovic’s patience finally paid off! The Serb had to wait until his twelfth appearance in the tournament to have the honor of lifting the Coupe des Mousquetaires. After suffering three defeats in the final (2012, 2014 and 2015), “Djoko” − who had made the French Open title his main priority for the 2016 season − managed to achieve his goal. Despite losing the first set of the final against Andy Murray, he was able to turn things around and clinch the match in four sets. He thus became the first player since Rod Laver to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time.
In the women’s draw, Garbiñe Muguruza caused a sensation by denying Serena Williams a fourth French Open title, as well as the all-out record for Grand Slam victories (23, which she achieved at the Australian Open in 2017). In the final, the Spaniard took control of the match and overcame the American in straight sets (7-5 6-4), thus pocketing her first ever Grand Slam title.
The French players also tasted success at the 2016 tournament, with Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic reigning supreme in the women’s doubles and Geoffrey Blancaneaux in the boy’s singles.
