1997

Highlights of the tournament

For only the third time in the history of the tournament, the men’s singles is won by an unseeded player. Gustavo Kuerten comes into the tournament at No.66 in the ATP rankings but manages to emulate France’s Marcel Bernard in 1946 and Sweden’s Mats Wilander in 1982, as well as becoming the first Brazilian to win a Grand Slam title.

The 100th anniversary of the women’s tournament is marked by a victory for Iva Majoli (aged 19) who defeats young Swiss player Martina Hingis (16 years old and freshly-minted world No.1) in the final. Majoli’s win is also a first for Croatia.

A new attendance record is set with 364,501 spectators across the fortnight.
