1988

Highlights of the tournament

Steffi Graf wins her second consecutive title, without dropping a set. And for the first time in a final, the winner keeps her opponent – USSR’s Natasha Zvereva – off the score-sheet in a match which is done and dusted in just 34 minutes, making it the shortest in the history of the women’s singles.

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Roland Garros stadium, the French Air force’s aerobatic demonstration team flies over Centre Court before the men’s singles final.

Five years on from Yannick Noah’s win, France is hopeful of another title with Henri Leconte in the final of the men’s singles, but the lefty falls to Mats Wilander, who wins his third Parisian title in the process.

After previously being shown on TF1, the tournament is broadcast for the first time on the two public service channels, Antenne 2 and FR3.
