Highlights of the tournament

Shortly after her 18th birthday, Germany’s Steffi Graf becomes the youngest player to win Roland-Garros, and she gets to hold aloft the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen, designed by jewellers Mellerio (as indeed was the Coupe des Mousquetaires). The German win her first Grand Slam title and brings an end to the Chris Evert / Martina Navratilova hegemony, defeating the latter in the final.

Ivan Lendl retains his title, beating a familiar foe in the shape of Mats Wilander in the final. This is the Czech’s third success in Paris.
