Highlights of the tournament

Björn Borg decides to take early retirement at the age of 26, but Sweden quickly finds a new hero. On his debut in the main draw, Mats Wilander goes all the way and wins the title, becoming the youngest ever winner of the French Open at the age of 17 years and nine months. In the semi-finals against Jose-Luis Clerc, Wilander also shows incredible sportsmanship by asking for match point to be replayed after the umpire had already declared him the winner of the match.

One year after her fellow Czech Hana Mandlikova, Martina Navratilova takes the women’s title at the expense of USA’s Andrea Jaeger.

The stadium undergoes some refurbishment, with improvements to the media and medical centres.
