Highlights of the tournament

With Björn Borg away playing on the WTT circuit, again for financial reasons, Guillermo Vilas needs no second bidding to steal in and take his title, becoming the first Argentinean winner of Roland-Garros in the process. The final is oneway traffic, with Vilas dropping just three games to America’s Brian Gottfried.

Yugoslavia’s Mima Jausovec does likewise, with Chris Evert again absent, defeating Romania’s Florenta Mihai in the final.

John McEnroe wins both the boy’s singles and the mixed doubles with fellow American Mary Carillo. The men’s qualifiers meanwhile are held at the CASG club at Jean Bouin stadium, while the women’s take place at the “Tir-aux-Pigeons” club.
