| BACKGROUND |
| Paris was introduced to Andy Roddick in 2001. The American made it through two rounds, but has not bettered that performance to date. Now, eight years later the former world No1 seems to have unlocked some of the mysteries of the French clay. | After much uncertainty, Gael Monfils decided the day before his first round match that he would participate at Roland Garros. He has not appeared in any trouble so far and at home on his favourite court, “Sliderman” is ready to push himself to the limit. |
| CURRENT FORM |
| After a shaky end to his 2008 season, Andy Roddick got down to some intense training with Larry Stefanki. Slimmed down and more agile, the 2003 US Open champion has consistently shown his highest level tennis in 2009, even on clay. The Austin resident returned from his honeymoon to compete in the Madrid Masters 1000 and made it to the quarterfinals. In Paris, Roddick is showing his best-ever performance on the red dirt. He has not lost a set yet… | So far there has been no sign of Monfils’ knee injury. After a six-week absence from the circuit, “La Monf” seems to be in fine form, his acrobatic feats on court thrilling the home fans. |
| STRENGTHS |
| Andy’s major weapon is definitely his serve. His is one of the strongest on the pro circuit. The topspin effect he adds to his game is unquestionably effective on clay. His forehand puts him in control of the game. Physically fine-tuned, the 26 year-old has regained his ability to cover the court. | Just like his opponent, Gael Monfils possesses a superb serve (with movements quite similar to Roddick). His explosive topspin forehand destroys his opponents on clay. Unlike the American however his backhand is more consistent. And it is certainly clear that “Sliderman” is one of the best at moving around on the clay surface. |
| TACTICS |
| Andy Roddick will have to play aggressively. Even if he has learned to be more patient than in the past, long rallies could give Monfils the advantage. | If he is 100% fit, the Frenchman should take control of the game. With his serve as his best defence, his shots from the backcourt are also dangerous for Roddick. |
| HEAD-TO-HEAD |
| The two have met 6 times and are tied at 3 wins each. The American has never defeated Monfils on clay however, suffering defeat in Rome 2006 and Portstach 2007. | Victorious so far over Roddick on his favourite surface, Gael Monfils hopes that 2009 will be no exception. |
