Day 14 - Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic

Daniel NestorNenad Zimonjic

Q. So Danny boy, chalking 'em them up like they're going out of style, Baby.
DANIEL NESTOR: I wouldn't go that far. We've averaged one Slam a year so far since we started playing together. That's pretty good for sure. We can't complain about that.
I think it's nice we won here. We've knocked on the door a couple times, semis and final last year. It was a pretty bitter loss to these guys that we beat today. It was nice to avenge that.
You know, it's funny. For me, I've had my best results I think at this Slam. I've played my most finals here. It's a little bit strange being from Canada, but I'll take it.

Q. Can we summarize it as basically they were the better team probably to 5 All, and then it was one way traffic your way after that?
DANIEL NESTOR: You love to bring in the negative. (Laughter.)
Q. No, they were a little better than you until 5 All.
DANIEL NESTOR: For sure. Until we broke at 5 All, they were the better team. They were generating more opportunities. They played really well. It was good for us to hang in there.
You know, we hit a couple good shots at 5 All to break. You know, we started rolling a little bit after that. You know, we kind of took over the match.

Q. How would you summarize the last two clay seasons, especially this one? What does it mean now heading on to the other surface?
DANIEL NESTOR: Unbelievable. Last year, you know, we won everything except this, and this year, you know, we won the big one, which is even better.
Obviously Wimbledon has been great to us. You know, I think that's still our best surface. I think, you know, it would be nice to try and win three in a row there.

Q. Was the plan to have all the kids come down on the court all along if you won, or was that a spontaneous move?
DANIEL NESTOR: Spontaneous. We don't plan that until it's over with. It was nice to have them on the court. They probably won't remember it, but...

Q. They were too young at Wimbledon.
DANIEL NESTOR: Yeah, for sure.

Q. You mentioned it was special because it was also Nenad's birthday.
DANIEL NESTOR: Yeah.

Q. Did you celebrate the day before, or did you wait for, you know, the victory today to do anything?
DANIEL NESTOR: No, I think there will be some celebrating tonight, more on his side.
We're going to London early tomorrow morning by train, you know, families, kids. It's gonna be a little bit of an adjustment.
Last couple of weeks I've had help taking care of the baby. Obviously my wife, and she's had her mom here and my parents. We're all alone come tomorrow. It's back to reality. Reality check.
Vacation is over for me, so can't go too well tonight.

Q. Nenad, have you ever had such a nice birthday present?
NENAD ZIMONJIC: No, not really. I mean, two years ago I was in both finals, but end up losing both. That was very disappointing.
Last year it was actually that we lost on my birthday; it was a tough match in the semifinals against Lukas and Leander. And, I mean, there's no better way to celebrate something than with a title like this.
Like I said on the court, all of them, they won this title once. I was the only one that played finals before but never won it, so it's a great pleasure to have this title.

Q. You guys play so well like towards the end of the tournament, and struggle so much at the beginning. Must be frustrating to see you're 2 4 down in the first match in the third set against guys that are not bad, but not as good as you. Is that frustrating or just normal for tennis?
DANIEL NESTOR: It's always, I think, a little bit tougher to get into the tournament. Most, you know, players, the top players, once they get through the first round, relax a little bit.
I mean, especially when you're at the top. I mean, teams are gunning for you. They're playing their best against you. Those guys played well against us. I thought we played all right in that. Couple unlucky breaks in the second set. It shouldn't have gone three sets.
We did a good job this whole tournament dealing with adversity. There was tough moments in a lot of matches. You know, it pays off in the end. I don't think we played as well as we did in other Slams we won.
Maybe in the final and, you know, maybe from the first few games of the quarters through to the final we played well. But, you know, there has been other Slams that we won obviously Wimbledon that we played better throughout. And, you know, that's a good sign going forward.

Q. You mentioned on court that you've had some tough time and tough conversations. Did you have any throughout this tournament that you won? And is that the way you need to work to win something.
DANIEL NESTOR: I didn't understand that.

Q. I think on court you mentioned I think that was Nenad that you had some tough times and tough conversations between the two of you. Did you have any during this tournament?
DANIEL NESTOR: We always speak our minds. That's one good thing about a relationship, is to be honest with each other and communicate. You don't want to go into any situation where you have something, you know, hanging in your head and you don't let it out.
Then, you know, you're thinking about it at the wrong time. It's better to get it off your chest. If we have a disagreement, we let it out. You know, we do that probably three, four times a week, so... (Laughter.)
It works for us, and, you know, there's no hard feelings after we yell at each other and we move forward. That's part of life.

Q. So do you have more of those with each other than you have with your wives?
DANIEL NESTOR: Definitely. Our wives don't put up with that stuff. (laughter.)
