Q. I suppose you're very happy now, because it was a near miss almost. Not many differences between you and her. YANINA WICKMAYER: Yes, I knew it was going to be tough. I know she's really a good player on clay. She's a lefty, but she varies a lot; therefore, there was not much pace or rhythm in the match. I wanted to get into the match. During the second set I didn't play really well, but she played better. And then during the third set I was really into the match and I fought until the end. That's all I could do, to try and continue and fight back during the rallies and fight again.
Q. During the two match points, what were you thinking about, because she was back? I had the impression the match could have changed. YANINA WICKMAYER: Yes, two match points that I missed, but it happens it anybody. When it's not yet over it was 5 All it was even 5 4, so nothing was over. I knew that, so it was like starting again. And then a break and we started again, and then we continued. I did what I had to do to lead and be 5 2. Q. Are you satisfied with the way you played? Because with your elbow you didn't have enough rhythm I think. Did you feel this? I think you made more errors than usual. YANINA WICKMAYER: I played my first match, and during my first match I wanted to play better yesterday than today. There were two days in between the two matches, so this means the rhythm was different during the first match, but with less pace. She didn't give me enough pace today. She's not easy to play against on clay. She's a lefty and can do all types shots. It was not easy for me to find rhythm and stay in the match, so I tried to fight on all points and have rallies and stay in the rallies. Q. Can you tell us more about your elbow, by the way? There were three sets today. YANINA WICKMAYER: This morning she was a bit tired, so I think it's normal. It's only been two and a half weeks since the surgery, so it's normal. After playing, you know, I wanted to practice. I wanted to be ready for the matches. It lasted almost three hours, so it's quite long. On clay it's even more difficult than on hard. So she was a bit tired, but that's all. So let's hope that tomorrow she'll be ready to play again. Q. There was no swelling? No pain? YANINA WICKMAYER: I applied ice after my match. I try and take care of my elbow. But it's normal that she is a bit tired. It wouldn't be normal if there's nothing afterwards, after two and a half weeks, after playing two matches in a week of practice it's normal. But I work with the physiotherapist and the doctor every day, so there's no problem. Q. It's the first time you go through the second round here in Paris. Would you say that all that's going to come is total bonus? YANINA WICKMAYER: I'll see. Tomorrow if it's just like today. I'll do my best to be ready tomorrow to be fit so that my arm is okay tomorrow. I played twice against Hantuchova. I was defeated twice on hardcourts. On clay it's gonna be different. We'll see. I'll discuss this this evening and tomorrow morning to see what's gonna happen. Q. Do you have the feeling that on clay you have the upper hand or not? YANINA WICKMAYER: I don't know how she plays on clay. I've not seen her this week or the week before. I don't know. She won against two girls, so it means she plays well. We'll see. I don't know if anything will change. We'll see tomorrow. Q. You said you will discuss this. Who do you prepare with, Patrick? YANINA WICKMAYER: No, Patrick works with Aravane. Ann is here, so I work with Ann. She's with her, because Patrick works with Aravane. Q. What will you take away from your matches against Hantuchova? Do you think you can hurt her? On the contrary, what are the things you don't like about her game? YANINA WICKMAYER: I think in Antwerp it's too long ago, and Indian Wells I had a match point. I couldn't win this match point. It's different. It's on hardcourt. Here we play on clay, so it's different. So I don't know. I'll start practicing tomorrow morning. I don't want to think about it too much this evening. I'll get into the courts doing my thing and playing my game. We'll see. The rest will come. Q. What did you do yesterday? I think that you knew quite early, at 4:00 p.m., that you wouldn't play. YANINA WICKMAYER: At 6:00 I knew, but I practiced in the morning. I was hitting balls, and then I went to the hotel at 3:00 or 4:00. I practiced 15 minutes or I was hitting the balls 15 minutes, and then it started raining again, and then an hour after practicing. So I spent a lot of time at the hotel. Physically I practiced again afterwards, so it was okay. |
